Brought intf daily contact with an-
gels of human form—as gelt of
sweetness as well as of purity—these
criminal weaklings recognise the
burning shame and deep dishonor
of their sinful life. Aided by the
example, by the counsels and by
the prayers of their white-robed
guardians, they resolve to die a
thousand deaths rather than ever
return to the vile pit out of which
they have been to mercifully drawn.
One word in conclusion: “A
bad tree cannot bring forth good
fruit.*’ Now this admirable Order
of the Good Shepherd it a trait of
the Catholic church. If any protest-
aut sect possesses such an institu-
tion it should be advertised. 1 am
not aware of its existence. Some
few parodies there are of the Catho-
lic religious orders; hot these puny
travesties are so grotesquely remote
trom the glorious originals that they
would be ludicrous if they were not
so pathetic.

I repeat, the Order of
a fruit, ay a
mere creature of the Catholic '
Church; a Pope’s nod gave birth to i
it, and one stroke of a pen held in
the hand of the triple-crowned sov- 1
ereign of the Vatican would wipe it
out of existence as utterly aa though
it bad never been. Rational reader,
it it reasonable to praise tbe fruit

Talks af His fieoaut Trip to Oaliibniaaad
Other Points—Ex-Deniaoniana.
The Gazkttkxs received a call
Tuesday from our townsman, Cbas.
H. Litsinger, wbo has just returned
from a tour of California, Utah and
other points. He brought home
some interesting data of ex l>eni-
■onians. J. M. Hill, the merchant
tailor, has located in the Escondido
valley at a small town of the tame
name. He has all tbe work that
he can do, and is happy and con-
tented with his surroundings. His
son Cory is with him, beiog a
member of a surveying party.
Ex Councilman Billy Hann is at
Lot Angeles wot king at his trade,
receiving $2.50 per day. He went
to work the second day after his ar-
rival. ,
John Creager, wbo is associated
with F. R. Guiteau in the crude oil
business, has been sick ever since he
reached Los Angeles. Mr. Lit-
singer does not think that Guiteau
and Creager are doing very well,
baiely holding their own. They
have the gold fever had, and Lit-
singer says that both men are sure
to leave for Alaska in the spring.
Mr. Litsinger saw in Los An-
geles $69,000 which a man and
wife had taken from a small hole in
the Klondike region. The man ad-
vised all against going, and pre-
dicted that thousands will perish
who attempt to croaa the terrible
mountain pass.
Lonnie Mitchell is at Los An-
geles doing fairly well in the real
estate busineaa.
White Thompson and his parents
are at Loa Angelea.
Our old townsman, Dave Welty,
is at Eacondido. He has a fruit
farm well under way, and seems to
he prospering. Mr. Welty was
not particularly stuck on Southern

A dispatch from Sherman speaks of
the very singular death at Ed Klein,
a former resident of Denison: Ed
Klein died at bis home on North
street at 11 o’clock last night. He
was afflicted with a peculiar erup-

physicians to be a parallel of a pe-
culiar microbe trouble which ap-
peared in St. Louis for tbe first
time this year, but after several con-
sultations physicians failed to satisfy
themselves in regard to the disease.
