If it's September it must mean the
fall migration has begun—and it has!
Joan and Scott Holt report seeing
some early migrants during a recent
trip to Honduras. There they saw a
black and white warbler and a
prothonatary warbler on Guanja, an
island off the coast of Honduras.
Migration of birds that nest in North
America and winter in Central and
South America began in late July and
early August with a few species, Joan
Holt says. "Many more will pas
through in the next month," she added.
On Saturday, after Friday’s heavy
rains, the Holts saw large flocks of
yellow warblers aocompwiied by east-
ern wood pewees (small flycatchers)
eastern kingbirds, a mourning war-
bler (named for its gray-black head
and cape)andaydlow-breasted chat
The rain has come at a good time for
the migrating birds, for it will generate
lots or insects and flowers to fatten
them up as the move through the
Coastal Bend for the long journey
south. Holt says.
Joan Holt also tolls us that the hum-
mingbirds are coming to feeders and
flowers in the garden. September is a
big month for hummer migration, and
it's time to put the feeders out. Holt
advises. To make hummingbird nec-
tar, mix one-fourth cup of sugar in one
cup of boiled water. Be sure to change
