ie7End of the
"R" word!In last year's January Newsletter for Families, we talked
about the importance of using words that are caring
and respectful. (See "What does 'intellectual disability'
mean?" on page 3.) We said that some places and laws
still used the term "retardation" or "MR" to describe
people who need extra help with language, self-care, or
learning. This year, we can report that
a new law was passed in the
nation a few months ago
that ends the use of those
words in health, education,
and labor law from now on.
Those words will be replaced
with the term "intellectual
disability."7

notably the family of Rosa e roO n .
Marcellino, a child with Down
Syndrome in Maryland. The
family's U.S. Senator, Barbara Mikulski, sponsored a
bill to end use of the "R" word. The bill became known
as "Rosa's Law." Senator Mikulski said, "Rosa's Law will
make a greatly needed change that should have been
made well before today. And it will encourage us to
treat people the way they would like to be treated." The
senator also said the change will have a positive effect
on more than 6 million Americans. -Have you moved?
