Area farmers throughout the county met Monday
evening in the meeting room of the court house to
hear basic farm program requirements discussed.
Preceding the meeting, Claude Hearne of Seagraves
was elected as the Businessman Director for the
Plains Cotton Growers. D. C, Jeffries serves as
the Farmer Director. Hearne replaced Joe Ander -
son, who chose not to run for a new term.
Mr. Ed Dean, representing Plains Cotton Growers,
told the 72 farmers and visitors present that the
Cotton Growers had taken in 2 more counties, mak-
ing a total of 25. He discussed the promotion the
association had and research they were doing. He
pointed out that 540 mliles of traps for the boll
weevil control program are in operation trying to
keep the boll weevil off the South Plains.
James C. Hodges, ASC Office Manager, pointed
out in the meeting basic farm program requirement^
asking area farms to do the following four things:
1) Sign up for the program.
2) Plant within the program.
3) Certify by specific dates within the program
4) Work the crop in a work-like manner.
MACHINERY AND GRADERS ARE HARD AT WORK AT THE CBK
PACKING SHED, SORTING AND GRADING PEACHES FOR SHIP-
MENT.
Golden ripe peaches in an orchard are a beautiful
sight to behold and everyone with a fancy for this
luscious fruit is invited to take part in the Gaines
County Peach Tour on Friday, July 18.
The Annual Tour will get underway at 9 a.m. at
the west side,of the county courthouse here in Semi-
nole, announces Calvin Holcomb, Gaines County
Agricultural Agent. The tour will end at about 1:00
p. m.
Orchards to be visited include the C. B. K., Olivei;
Bel-Air and Freeman and Moore Orchards. Har-
vesting and packing operations will be observed and
a new $60, 000 packing shed will be visited.
A special attraction during the tour will be a visit
with the Gaines County Peach Queen, Vicki Wallace,
of Seminole. Miss Wallace was second runner-up
in the recent state peach queen contest.
Two horticulturists with Texas A&M University's
Agricultural Extension Service will also be on hand
to observe the peach crop and to comment on various
phases of the peach industry. They are Dr. Arlie
Powell of College Station and Dr. Jody Worthington
of Stephenville.
The Peach Industry is big business in Gaines
County and a definite boost to the overall economy,
points out Holcomb. At present, there are about
2, 200 acres of peach trees in the county with some
1, 500 of them in actual production. s*eft8

Ray Trent, Denver City
businessman, has formally an-
nounced his bid for election to
the 73rd Legislative District post
vacated July 1 by State Repre- '
sentative Randy Pendleton.
Trent, insuranceman and
laundry owner, former employee
of Phillips, Shell and Skelly Oil
Companies in the Permian Basin,
is campaigning for election to
the Texas House of Represent-
atives in the July 22 special
election in Yoakum, Gaines,
Andrews, Martin, Lynn and
Dawson Counties. The election
was called by Gov. Preston
Smith following the resignation
of Pendleton who was named to
Smith's Washington, D. C.,
staff.
