Vote Not Unanimous.
The action of the association was
not unanimous, the vote on the pass-
age of the resolution standing 3 to 2,
although Henry T. Oxnard, president
of the association, said he had enough
proxies with him to make the vote
12 to 2. The opponents of the resolu-
tion claim to have thirty or more fac-
tories In the association and that the
Teprosentatlpti at the meeting dies
not comprise half of the factories In
the association. None of the sixteen
factories In Michigan are represented
in the meeting except that of Julius
Stroll of Detroit, treasurer of the asso-
ciation.
Informal Conferences Held.
During the day before meeting, the
members of the association held In
formal conferences, hut when they
entered formally upon their meeting
at 3 o’clock no conclusions as to what
action would he taken had been
reached. The principal subject under
consideration was the attitude the as
slctatiOn would assume toward the
Cuban reciprocity treaty now pending
In the senate. Mr. Oxnard, president
of the association, Informed President
Roosevelt a few days ago that so far
as he was personally concerned, he
would withdraw whatever opposition
he had to the Cuban treafy.
No Pledges Giv*n.
He believed that this view would
he taken by the association, although
he did not undertake to pledge that
the association would not oppose the-
treaty.
When the representatives of the as-
sociation met here today, some oty
jection developed to taking any ac-
tion favorable to the treaty. During
the informal conference* In the early
part of the day a majority of the
larger beet sugar growers and manu-
facturers expressed themselves as
being favorable to any action that
would bring about stability in the in-
dustry

Large Concourse of Friend* Follow
Remain* of Late 81 Ryan.
The funeral of the late SI Ryan,
which occurred from the Church of
the Immaculate Conception yesterday
at 12 o’clock, wa* largely attended and
attested the esteem in which Mr.
Ryan was held by all (lasses. The
escort of the body from Nagley 8 j
Carr’s undertaking parlors to the j
church formed probably the most Im-
posing funeral eortegg ever seen In
this city.
Wilson'* band led the procession and
acquitted themselves nobly, their mili-
tary bearing as well as their music
attracted much attention Next came
the Eagles and then the Elks and the
Red Men. The Uniform Rank of the
Red Men acted as an escort to the
body and marched on either side of the
heanfh. The active pallbearers were

At the church mass was said and
tlic remain* were then conveyed to
the Sunset depot and placed tiboard
the Holden State Limited and started
on their way to Ixmsdale, ft. I . ac-
companied by P. E. Ryan, brother of
the deceased.
The hearse used In the funeral was
draped In white and blue crepo und
on top was an eagle, the body of which j
was made of evergreen and In the <
back of which was a Grecian eross.
The carriage bearing the brother of j
the deceased was draped in mourning. ,
In addition to the orders which turned I
out at the funeral a great number j
of rltizens, who had known and re- ,
spec ted the deceased, followed the re- ;

The hackmen of this city are com- i
plaining that they are being dlserlm-1
Inated against by the Mexican eus- 1
toms officers at the International
bridge.. ^
They*rlalm that the order forbidding
the passage of vehicles over the
bridge after 10 o’clock at night Is be-
ing rigorously enforced as against the j
American hackmen. but winked at j
where the driver of a Mexican carry- j

is the order enforced against the |
hackmen from this side that if they i
happen to get caught on the Juarez j
side after lo o’clock, they are not al-I
lowed to return until the following j
morning. , 1
The hackmen claim that Mexican j
vehicles have been seen to come over I
after prohibited hours and their j
claim Is substantiated by the Amer-1
Iran customs officers, who have re- j
marked upon the unfairness of it.
Until recently the hack drivers of S
this city were given a pass, which al- '
