Thta announcement w-as posted yes-
terday on the doors of many El I aao
store# and business houses. It was
the Jewish New Year's day, and In
keeping with the spirit of the cele-
bration nearly all of the Jewish mer-
chants closed their places of business,
small shops and large department
store*.
The fleet day, ending at sundown,
some of the places were opened. The
Jewish New Year's day. which this
year marks the beginning of the cycle
5872, began at sundown Friday. Ser-
vice# for both Orthodox and Reformed
Jews were held Friday night and yes-
terday morning.
At Temple Mount Sinai, yesterday
morning services were conducted by
Rabbi Martin Ztelonka. He preached
oa “Bet the House In Order.” Ser-
vice* for those of the Orthodox church
were held la the Odd Fellows ball.
Rev. Nathan Schechtcr. of this city,
apd Rabbi 8. Kline of New Orleans,
officiating. Fiabbl Kline will lecture
this morning In the hall on "How
Should We Sacrifice In This Epoch.”

Two Dinners to Entertain Texas
Commander
Brigadier General Joseph W, Dun-
can will bo wined and dined on his
return from Cloudcroft on the first
of this week. The commander of
the department of Texas will be given
a dinner by army officers of the
Fourth cavalry and the Twenty-third
Infantry, who will combine with the
chamber of commerce to make the
affair a success. Also J. S. Curtis,
of the ranch on which the Infantry will
be encamped Tuesday and Wednes-
day. Is planning to dine the general
and his staff on Tuesday night.

Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 23.—The
Canadian elections were felt when the
price of flour bounded thirty cents on
the barrel.
Members of the milling and grain
concerns here are of the opinion that
today's flurry Is the beginning of what
may prove to be an unprecedented
lift in flour prices.

EARTHQUAKE SHOCK.
Berkeley. Cal., Sept. 22.—The seis-
mograph at the University of Cali-
fornia registered a slight earth shock
last night. The center of disturbance
wm about 2,000 miles distant, but the
direction was not indicated by the
record. The record Indicated that
the shock was very slight at 'ts point
of origin.
