NORFLEET

by one of the gang. They knew their game was up and
the whole lot of them made an instant duck for freedom.
Ward and Gerber rushed for the railroad station.
Stetson and Spencer left via the fire-escape.
Fortunately Cathey got to Sheriff Shay in time for
him to head off Ward and Gerber just as they were in
the act of boarding a train.
In a suitcase which Ward was carrying, the officers
found among the contents the original papers and credentials
used on both Cathey and me. The name of Stetson
was signed to most of them. This at first gave the
authorities the impression they had captured the master
mind of the ring. I regretted this was not true. But
we cannot have everything. Not all at once, anyway!
One of the most interesting finds in the contents
was a check book of Stetson's, the stubs of which showed
checks for large amounts had been made out in favor of
"M. H. Harrison" and "Dede Winters." Who these
were, of course, I did not know until much later. My
original contract with them was also with the other
articles.
I couldn't help wondering if Stetson had a Hudson
seal coat under his arm when he went down the fireescape.
He might even at this time be running around
town disguised in it, waiting to catch a train.
