NORFLEET

to the city detective a long time ago and asked him to be
on the watch for them and to notify me if they appeared."
This almost knocked me out. All through my
chase I had been handicapped by the lack of photos
of the men I hunted. W\hat could not I have accomplished
if I had been in possession of these photos?
"Bu-but," I stammered, "I went through every picture
here in Fort Worth looking for my men, but never
one did I find."
"They are here just the same, for I sent them. It
was after Joe Furey had stolen a lot of papers from a
man in New York named Stetson, including Stetson's
masonic membership card. Come on and we'll find
them."
I hastened to follow, my mouth "watering" for the
possession of these important pictures.
Cornwall paused a moment, then said:
"You stay here and I'll go hunt them up and bring
you enough pictures of that gang to make a big family
album."
I waited in the courtroom with all the patience I
could muster.
When Cornwall returned he had lost most of his
"zip." WVith face grave and in the manner of one who
has just learned for the first time his limitations, he informed
me that there must be a mistake as it was claimed
the photos and descriptions had not been received.
Ward and Gerber were still in the courtroom when
Cornwall returned. He seemed to forget we were not
alone.
"I'll tell you one thing, Norfleet," he began, but
was interrupted by Sheriff Clark who nodded to one of
the officers to take the prisoners out.
"Just a minute, Cornwall. Now that they have
both been satisfactorily identified, let's wait until we are
alone to discuss matters."
Cornwall watched for the door to close behind the
men, so eager was he to give me good advice.
