Annual Mardi Gras Ball to benefit Aztec
+Krewe to host
2011 costume gala
fundraiser Mar. 5
By Kathryn Stapp
Monsters, queens,
clowns and other charac-
ters will come out to play,
as members of Albany’s
Krewe de Aztecia hosts
the 2011 Mardi Gras Ball.
The gala is set for Sat-
urday, March 5 beginning
at 7:00 p.m. at the Whit-
ney Theatre, according
to Krewe president John
Bernard, with proceeds
to help pay the operating
expenses of the restored
Aztec Theater.
The event, which was
begun eight years ago
when the charitable orga-
nization was established,
will feature the music of
the Abilene party band
Freeride. Costumes or
cocktail attire are recom-
mended.
This year the big party
also includes a raffle for
a chance to win a travel
voucher for two. The win-
ner must be a Mardi Gras
“Big Party” ticket holder to
enter the raffle. The win-
ner will be selected during
the festivities but doesn’t
need to be present to win.
Purchase of a Big Party
ticket as well as a raffle
ticket is required.
The Big Party admis-
sion cost is $75 per person.
A table for eight can be
reserved for $300 in ad-
dition to the per person
ticket price.
Proceeds from mem-
berships and the ball
help maintain the historic
downtown theater.
Bernard explained that
in most cases, basic rental
of the building does not be-
gin to cover even the direct
operating costs, primarily
involving utilities and the
cost of cleaning.
The ball pays the ma-
jority of the operating
expenses for the theater,
and everyone in the com-
munity is invited to j oin the
membership of the Krewe
and to attend the Mardi
Gras Ball.

Funds needed to finish building
♦ VFD to double
as meeting center
The Albany Volunteer
Fire Department is asking
for help to complete the
interior community center
kitchen and restrooms at
the new fire station.
AVFD recently built
a more modern and user
friendly fire station, de-
signed to accommodate not
only the Albany Volunteer
Fire Department, but to
serve as a community
center as well.
A large training room
will function as the com-
munity reception room,
and the public restrooms
and a kitchen area for de-
partment and public fund
raising activities. The con-
struction is in compliance
with the Americans with
Disabilities Act, so that all
citizens and guests will be
able to use the facilities.
“With the completion
of this fire station, we
will be able to provide an
adequate staging area
for other emergency ser-
vices when needed, such as
the Texas Forest Service,
which is in Shackelford
County on a regular basis,
and the Red Cross, who
comes in to assist in any
type of emergency that
we may have here,” AVFD
chief Kyle Tischler said.
The Albany Volunteer
Fire Department is asking
for community help.
“We are asking for
financial donations to com-
plete this new fire station.
There is still a lot of work
to be done and the expenses
will be beyond our reach
alone. Our firefighters
have completed much of
the work ourselves to save
money on this project,”
Tischler added.
All donations will be
used for building materials
and some labor to complete
the project.' The depart-
ment is not using the city
provided operating budget
for this construction.
“We must rely on our
citizens to help with this.
We ask that you truly
consider helping us in our
endeavor to better our de-
partment and community
by making a tax deductible
donation to the Albany Vol-
unteer Fire Department,”
Tischler concluded.
Donations can be made
through the Friends of the
Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment organization (Tax
ID #27-1303225), or the
AVFD at P.O. Box 3025,
Albany Texas, 76430, or

Two new Shackelford
County candidates have
placed their names on the
ballot for elected positions
during the last week, in ad-
dition to the eight contend-
ers who filed previously.
April Gardner, who
was appointed to fill the
unexpired term of former
Albany city council mem-
ber Mary Beth Jones, has
placed her name on the
ballot for election.
In Moran, Lanham
Martin has filed to retain
his seat as a school trustee.
The elections will all be
held on Saturday, May 14.
School Board Elections
Two incumbent trustees
have asked for re-election
to the Albany school board.
Larry Nall and Robert
Montgomery have both
filed for three-year terms.
Martin has filed for
another term on the Moran
school board.
No one has filed for
the other seat; currently
occupied by John Cottle.
Hospital Positions
Three of the seven at-
large seats on the Shack-
elford County Hospital
District’s board must be
filled this spring, with no

council member April
Gardner joined Cindy
New, Robert Snyder, Joe
Tidwell, JoAnn Estridge,
Shannon Wilkins and Don

be expiring this spring,
along with that of mayor

run for re-election.

Waller attend Forts Trail Round-up
Over 70 registrants
from 23 different com-
munities, including Susan
Waller of Albany, attended
the Texas Forts Trail’s
annual tourism and pres-
ervation RoundUp on
Thursday, Feb. 17, at the
Abilene Civic Center. The
event included break-out
sessions, a networking lun-
cheon and general wrap-up
session with door prizes.
During 2009, visitors
to and within Texas spent
$51.8 billion and generated
$7 billion in local, state and
federal tax receipts. The
Forts Trail seeks to make
sure that communities
within the Region reap a
portion of these economic
benefits.
The RoundUp offered
nine different break-out
sessions that included
how to incorporate social
media into an already busy
schedule and how land
owners might consider
using visitors to diversify
