When the kuck of Samuel J.
Lewin Turned
(From the New Tork Tribune).
Born oil Friday the thirteenth. Private
Samuel J. Lewln of West One Hundred
and Forty-ninth street. New Tork lived
his 25 years in the belief that he was
lucky.
This Impression was strengthened after
he was drafted and Joined the 105th In-
fantry. Going across hit ship was at-
tacked by a U-bbat "which was sunk.
Then in the trendies he had several nar-
row escapes from shells gas bombs and
macnlne gun fire. But finally he was
wounded and yesterday his relatives
learned that he had died In a hospital in
France.
Illustrating his luck he wrote to his
sister:
"I waa on the outpost duty when I was
called away tor 15 minutes. When I re-
turned the post was demolished and all
that I could see was a large hole in the
ground. I call that luck. i
"Yesterday an air bomb dropped 50 feet
from where I' stood and we had a Job
burying 14 horses killed by the ex-
plosion." In another letter Lewin explained the
operation of enemy gas bombs. After
telling of their deadly effect he added:
"But they haven't got me yet. I feel so
lucky I don't think they will."
The day after this letter was received
there came a cable from him: "Wounded
In both legs. Don't worry will be around
soon." On the following day he died.

port of the senate military subcommittee

clared Information In the report already
Is known to the allies and the enemy and
charged that the purpose of the order was
to prevent the information going to the
American people.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts re-
publican leader said the plain purpose of
the censorship orders was to influence
publishers against publication of the re-
port in this country.
"The only people In the world." said
Mr. Lodge "who do nut know about the
aircraft situation are the American peo-
ple. It is perfectly well known to our
allies and to the enemy."
Senator Poindexter suggested that the
report was censored because it gave the
truth regarding exaggerated statements
