4 THE HOUSTON POST: : SATURDAY-' MORNING JULY 51919
BUFFS WIN AND LOSE AS NEW TEXAS SEASON OPENS
Houston's Tall Boy Stages
Small Sized Explosion in the
Ninth But Finally Settles
Heavy Assault of Patterson
.;. Doyle Snedecor Noyes
rriet al Too Much for Vet-
f eran Southpaw of Pirates
By "ANDY."
A real old time crowd wended it's way
.. to' the West Kud grounds yesterday to
set our Huffs and Galveston's aggrega-
te tion of tonne rs split a double bill u to --
and 5 to 4. It was an overflow crowd.
.. OoOO rabid baseball hungry tana either
: aat in the stands or withstood the rages
v of old Sol along the side lines. And the
fans were Dot disappointed. Although our
a own did not cop both times out enough
-i real baseball was played to send them all
. borne satisfied.
Harris twirled for the Buffs in the
opener and did it in fine style. Seven
t bingles was the best that Galveston could
. garter from bis delivery while our own
vT succeeded in pounding out 10 healthy
v swuts from James' pitching.
Some Fielding Stunts.
: -V Excellent fielding also made things in-
'teresting for the fans. A sensational run-
" ning catch by Menze of the locals in the
first inning brought the rabids to their
feet. He tore way over beyond the left
-. field foul line for a slashing drive and
f while still on the run made a beautiful
gathering.
The announcement of the fight returns
also attracted attention between in-
nings. Our help started early in the first
tame. In the third a double by Menze
started the ball rolling. Noyes crashed out
a single and Menze wored. Run one. In
the fifth Noyes singled. Harris made his
second sacrifice of the game advancing
t Noyes to second. Then Phelps made a bad
peg and Noyes scored. Kun two.
Then came the eighth. Bridwell singled
Patterson poled a long double into th
crowd Al going to third. Stellbaur
fouled out. Doyle singled scoring Brid-
well Snedecor smashed a double scoring
Patterson. Menze hit to the pitcher.
rJnedecor doubled scoring Doyle and Pat-
terson. Three runs and enough.
Oalvestons tribe showed signs of
activity in the ninth. Indeed many fans
were apprehensive unless it should be
'good bye ball game." Pepe singled.
Coombs did likewise and Bradley just
to bust matters singled also. One run.
Then Phelan crashed the old apple for
- another single and lo another run. But
Clark and Dowie smote the' ozone and
Hauser lifted one to the beavans which
was gobbled by Bridwell.
Just about that time the news arrived
that Dempsey had made a clean up on
Mr. Willard and players and crowd
swarmed the field. After some time order
was restored.
About that .second affair. About all
. you can say is that it was a real ball
gam from the firHt to the seventh.
The game was called in the seventh by
agreement
- Again did our home town tossers draw
first blood. Baggaa drew a walk. Brid-
well lifted to right. Tatterson the demon
slugger of the day singled scoring ltag-
gan. Htellbanr walked Doyle obtained
free transportation and Snedecor ground-
ed to the infield.
It looked like a twin victory for the
Buffs that is. it did until the (jalves-
hUJph ..bunch went to bat. Then well
count 'em yourself. Five runs. The
entire team batted around in this inning.
Two bases on balls two men hit by .iteh- J
er one double and four honest to good-1
nest singles and the story is told. Kos-1
ter who started for the locals lasted
just long enough to. get warmed up
when the calamity started. Bridwell trot-
ted out Smithson but he too was ao ud-
welcome party with the Calvestonians.
Then Edmondson took the mound. From
the last part of the second until the
last of the game be pitched excellent
balL And how the locals did try to make
up those runs. Along about the fifth
inning the crowd began to wax enthusias-
tic and stamped and pleaded and cheered
but though the Buffs tried their "dtru-
dest" they well one shy of tying.
Fifth Looked. Good !
In the fifth it looked as .though we
would even things. Patterson -.had his
second double of the' game and the third
for the day. Stellbaur wa'i wife oh an
infield hit. Doyle pounded the old pill
for a double to right. Couchuiair went
In the box for Galveston. Snedecor
went out. Cain" to Bradley. Menzie
walked. Myatt flew out to center. Stell-
baur scored on the out but Doyle was
out third. Galveston raised u howl at
this play claiming that SStelibnur hud
left the base too soon. Ko aggrieved did
Phelan become that the I'mps t'entell in-
vited hiin to the showers. After the
game had again started uuipx i.oticed
Phelan sitting on the bench and with
much gusto and gesturing ordered liiin
out of the grounds much to the delight
of the many young hoys who throned the
field. And about that same decision
from the press box it lookvd. a great
.deal as though Stellbaur had left the
base a little previous.
Doyle was cheated out of a triple
owing to the ground rule. He poled a
long liner to left center and" eusily made
third but was called back due to a
- ground rule.
In the ninth inning of the first game
. when the gulf city aggregation was mak-
ing life miserable for the- locals a few
fana pointed thumbs down on Harris.
Keveral shouted "take him out." but
Manager Bridwell decided not to pull the
lanky twirler and a . it . turjif d out his
judgment was correct. Too many cf
the ftmn are- ready tn - see' a pitcher
yanked after he has twirled air tiicut ball
just because a few bingles have been
made off hia delivery.
