This District Is Four and
Half Millions Short
Houston Post Special
DALLAS Texas Aug.' 13. The total
subscriptions of this Issue of treasury
certificates which cloaed at 3 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon amounts to 1762500.
This is over 45000O0 less than the
amount asked. We begin to realize that
if we are to do what the government ex-
pect ua to do that credits must be cur-
tailed. We realise that the movement of
the crops will begin in a very short time
and that the 40 per cent payment due on
the third Liberty loan must be mid
August 15.
And yet we feel that every bank In thla
district is carrying Daper which could be
collected and that the banks of this dis
trict must nroceed to adjust their affairs
so that funds can be invested In the
liqtiid. securities of the United States gov-
ernment in preparation for the .fourth
Liberty bond campaign. Corporations
should realize that another income and
excess profit tax will be due and that
funds should be set aside each month for
the payment of this taft. In that way the
business Is the least disturbed and the
government is given the benefit of the
money with which to feed and clothe the
soldiers whlcb are our real protection of
the business interests of this country. I
desire to express my appreciation of the
co-operation of the county chairmen and
the deputy State directors for their effi
cient worK during tne campaign.

. Associated Press Report.
NEW TORK Aug. 13. Abnormal war I
time demanda for cotton particularly
of the higher trades were blamed fori
tha disparity between prices in the!
southern marksta and future quotations I
on tho exchange by witnesses who tea- I
titled at tho government Inquiry Into the I
cotton trade begun here Tuesday. I
several brokers to d Charles A. Hrana.
conducting the Investigation as chief of I
tho . department of agriculture's bureau I
oi naruu mat exacting army ana navy
specifications have contributed toward
high price.
For articles for which in private trade I
inienor arraaea are used with complete I
succeaa the witness said the govern-1
ment departments have required white I
cotton of tho finest type. Announcing!
tnat the Investigation will not be con-
fined to the operations of the New Tork
Cotton exchange but will go into the
entire- quetsion of prices where cotton I
Is grown milled and traded on contracts I
for future delivery Mr. Brand declared
that the present differences in rates I
sejem to be wholly unjustified."
The bureau haa conducted a general in
quiry Into tho sharp advance between I
spot and exchange prices he said and I
nroooaea to anolv a remedy but Is seek- I
lng tho views of the public and of the I
Droaera oeioro compiling its final re-
port AS TO SPECULATION.
While. admitting- that 15 to 20 per cent
of the trading on the New Tork exchange I
Is In futorea. Walter L. Johnson presi
dent of the organisation said it waa not
always . possible to tell whether a cus-
tomer was dealing as an actual pur-
chaser of cotton or as a speculator. Bid-
near T. West of Little Hock.' Ark. led
the witnesses who laid at tha door of I
the government responsibility for the I
high prices of delivered cotton. Because I
60 to 66 per cent of. the spinners are en-
gaged on government contracts he de-
clared and so can appropriate first
grade products dealers find themselves I
unable to dlsrjose of the lower arrades.
Mr. West said that-the production of I
low grade cotton this vear waa slightly
lover thai of the last foor yanra. Be-
LauM ui tne aiBcnrninatiorr againex it oy I
the government authorities he said the I
market has practicaiy cone to pieces.
This in his opinion has much to do with
tne existing conditions.
During' the afternoon session Mr.
Brand to ascertain the extent of BDecu-
lation on the New Tork exchange asked I
how an effort to depress the market I
by snort selling could be detected. Sev
eral members replied that unless the I
movements were of considerable volume
and covered more than one grade it I
would be difficult s
SPOT SALES NOT PENALIZED.
Members asserted that no contracts are I
executed without charge. The exchange.
they said does not deal in margins but I
the clearing house association assesses a I
margin oi iiu a Dale on account for fu-
tures. Spot sales are not penalized.
Discussing the disparity between the
spot sales and futures. President John-
son declared that the spot buyer gets
exactly the cotton he wants but that In
futures the seller would naturally deliver I
the poorest quality possioie under the I
contract. This tendehcy with the labor I
situation and a close market make for I
the disparity he said.

Ask Your Friend What
He'll Take for His
Super-Six
Ask him what price he'd want if he couldn't get
another.
Look into the re-sale value of Hudsons in general
any model any year.
Compare the prices asked with usual standards.
Then you will appreciate why the Hudson owner
counts his-Super-Six as an investment
With growing" Scarcity curtailed production used
Super-Six values are bound to soar even higher.
Draw your own conclusions.
You don't buy a car for its re-sale value.
Nevertheless it is a comforting assurance to feel that
you have an automobile which stays young and'
holds its worth.
If you want a Super-Six act promptly. Every reason
is against delay. .
Place your order now even if you are anticipating
your future requirements.
