HOUSTON LOST BUT SCORED A RUN
Broke Goose-Egg Streak After 41 Innings Promising Rally
in Ninth Inning Nipped by Donalds and Grubb.
" s : "

Houston want down before Waco in the
opening game of the lerles at West End
Moaday 4 to 1. The Buffaloes broke
their scoreless streak putting over a tally
after 41 Innings of goose eggs.
A. ninth inning rally for Houston start-
ed off in slambang style with the first
man up reaching first on an error and
the next two singling. But the rally end-
ed as suddenly as it begap a run being
cut off- at the plate and the next two
batters striking out.
From first to last Eddie Donalds was
pounded hard but the Houston drives
went square Into the fielder's bands.
Blttle covered left In the clever way
which he has shown throughout the sea-
son with Coyle and James doing their
hair. Blttle's long running catch of
Niwnim'i drive to the fence reminded
fans of the stellar plays made by Hem-
ingway just prior to twisting his ankle.
Lniy Grubb couldn't miss them
around the hot corner.
Clever work on the bases was a big
factor in the Navigator victory.
Clean hits put over a run for each team
early In the game. Waco's first count
was In the second inning on Grubb's sin-
gle Conwell's sacrifice and Leslie's sin-
gle. Doubles by Mullins and Seitx en-
abled Houston to tie it in the third.
A double steal gave the visitors the
winning run in the fourth. Orubb walk-
ed was sacrificed by Conwell and went
to third on a passed ball. Leslie walked
and stole second. Jenkins pegged to
Beits on the play as a decoy to draw
Grubb off third base. Seitz let the ball
go through him and Grubb scored. Les-
lie was picked off second by Jenkins
and Kuhn flew out.
Houston had runners on second in the
sixth seventh and eighth Innings but
there they perished.
Waco drove in a pair of runs in the
ninth. Conwell dropped a Texas leaguer
back of third base. Leslie sacrificed
him to second. Kuhn lifted another
Texas leaguer his going to short center
field and Conwell moved to intra.
Donalds was passed filling the bags.
Bittle singled cleanly to left and scored
Conwell and Kuhn. Coyle walked and
tha ban were asraln filled. Malmauist
grounded a fast one to Tullos whose
throw to the plate forced Donalds. Jen-
kins thre wto first Malmqulst being safe
there by inches. Newnam returned the
peg to Jenkins in time to nip Bittle at
the Dlate for the third out.
Northen opened the last chance by
slapping a swift one to Malmqulst which
the second baseman juggled and Hub
waa aafA Jenkins slnaied to left. Nor
then taking second. Tullos lifted a Texas
leaguer to center field. As the runners
were uncertain the ball would go safe
they were late starting and Coyle pegged
to third in hope of beating Northen there.
His throw was high going clear over
Grubb's head against the fence. But
Grubb recovered It and made a beautiful
throw to the plate which caught Northen
by a foot or two. Citrano fanned. Hem-
ingway went in to bat for Newnam and
also struck out

Gene Moore Hero of V s
Protested Game WH
1 Battle Haw Today
X Gene Moore will start the gam
2 at West End this afternoon against
J Waco. It will be remembered with-
S out much effort by Houston fans
S that Gene Moore recently pitched
S against Waco on the Navigator lot
and the smoke of" that engagement
i has not yet cleared entirely away.
It would give Gene and all Hous-
ton much satisfaction If he could
repeat the stunt. Likewise It wduld
more than please the Skippers if
they could hammer Gene off the
mound In memory of the occasion.
The game starts at 4:30.- A
double-header is scheduled for one
5 of the remaining days of the Waco
stay here probably for Wednes-
day but this has not been definite-
ly settled.
