Preface
Comparatively little has been written about Collin County and its
pioneers; and heretofore no one has brought together the facts of its
history and economic development in one volume, written in simple
language. This has been the purpose of the writers. Much time and
effort have been spent in securing information about the lives and
achievements of pioneer families. Many families have been omitted;
but this is because not enough accurate information was available. Be-
cause of space limitations no effort was made to trace these pioneer
families down to the present. The writers hope that coming generations
of Collin County citizens will look with pride on the records of their
ancestors, bearing in mind that, as Macaulay has said: "A people that
take no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will never
achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by their de-
scendants."
The writers wish to express appreciation for valuable assistance ob-
tained from the numerous sources indicated in the references. They
are also indebted to the following individuals for encouragement and
for extra efforts in assisting them in securing information: Dr. H. Bailey
Carroll of the University of Texas; Miss Winnie Allen and Miss Earleen
Holleman, Archivists at the University of Texas; Mrs. B. Brandt, As-
sistant State Archivist, Austin; Virgil L. Dahlberg, County Agent,
McKinney; Mrs. McCarty Dowell, Sr., McKinney; W. T. Dungan,
McKinney; Dr. W. S. Wysong, Sr., McKinney; Miss Esther Brown,
El Paso; Miss Etta Quisenberry, Allen; and A. P. Rollins, Wylie.
