THIS PRAZ08 B
A memorial signed by the city
council of Brownsville tho cennty
board of commissioners and about
seventy citizens including tho
most prominent and influential men
of the county has been forwarded
to Hon W H Crain petitioning
congretB to allow tho amount ap-
propriated for the improvement ef
the bar at Brazos Santiago to be
used The sum appropriated by
act of congress for the purpose
amounts to 5884977 It is com
parativcly a email sum but if used
in the right way willl greatly hene
fit this pert Engineer Pouglass
of Galveston says that ft dredge
boat to be used for the purpose
could be built for 48000 with
which a depth of sixteen feet over
the bar could be obtained and that
at an expense of 10000 annually
this depth could be easily maintain-
ed Engineers here say the plan is
entirely feasibleahd that the estitna
ted coat is correct There is little
donbt that deep water could be ob
tained over this bar as all condi-
tions favor the scheme Sixteen
fcot of wator over the bar would
make Brazos a port of entry and
Brownsville a great distributing
point for all interior towns to the
west of us The proposed line to
Laredo would assume much more
important proportions than already
claimed lbi it A railroad from
here to Laredo would at once make
deep water at Brazos Santiago a
mutter of prime importance as it
would mean everything to Laredo
and ail the country which would be
tributary to snch a railroad Looked
at troqi every point ot view we can
see nothing but profit to accrue to
everyono interested in tho matter
Laredo would reap immediate ben-
efits by getting her froights by
Such a direct line and Brownsville
would at once become an important
city while every intervening town
from Santa Maria up tho river
would thrive apd become bushiest
centers
Soue say that those citizens of
Brownsville who have enffioient
capital to build a railroad have all
they want and dont cure whether
a railroad comes here or not Am-
bition should stir them to do some
thingfor the country It is not of-
ten the case that a man bucomps so
rich that he wants no more Lands
sell in this county now at two dol-
lars per acre With a railroad to
Laredo and a good barber at Brazos
these lands wouldbring at leagt ten
dollars per acre The riches of oar
capitalists would bs increased ten-
fold
The mammoth Sunday oditions
of the big dailies arc receiving gen
eral criticism About the most
amusing remark on the subject is
one from the Lowell Courier which
says Tie beat idea of a Sabbath

tries to run through a Sunday news-
paper
The proposed irrigation scheme
of Lieutenant Chatfiolds works on
the plan ot no cure no pay
This should be sufficient to gnaran
tee that the lieutenant knows what
he is abeut But judging by the
remarksof our Santa aria corres
ppndent there seems to be a lack
of confidence on the part of some
in the lieutenants ability to carry-
out his plan This is of course
due tq the fact that they do not

From Oar Begular Correspondent
Santa Maria Dec 26 Christ
mas is over The day dawued
gloomy aud miBty but cleared to-
wards noon and the bright warm
beams of the sun made the latter
half of the day glorious Though
times are dull the people are bright
arid cheerful andmany gay greet-
ings and good wishes passed frem
ope to another
The damp rainy weather is in-
fusing high hopes in the breast of
the farmers who are working with
a will to get in their crops Surely
the mild balmy winter we are hav
ipg with the good prospects of
bounteous crops is or should be
sufficient to maka us Inngh aloud
with gladness of heart aud seen re-
cover from and forget the hard
times we have had the last tew
years
Your correspondent as well as
the majority of the residents of this
locality are with you in regard to
the railroad It is indisputable
that with the very poor and aluv
enly manner uf planting and culti-
vating crops that with tho excep
tton of dry years tar more corn is
raised in this county than can bo
consumed With a r ilruad to
carry off produce hundreds yts
thousands of acres would be put in
cultivation where now thero is
nothing but douse chaparral The
people would have greater induce
mtmt to prepare aud cultivate their
lands better and not as now stop
with a few acres bareiy enough
for home consumption
Insist upon a railroad and then
if old Jupiter P withholds hie
moisture we wjil all chip in and
aid the lieutenant in his irrigation
soiietne
By the way is the lieutenant dyr
nig with love for this country tosee
jt blossom as the rose or is there a
moiety of solfitJincss in his desire
tOgfliod the land And in case of
along drought sucli as that we are
all so glad has ended recently
where is he going to get tlje water
Why the bleeped man could have

across the liio Grande high and
dry Just here it occurs to your
correspondent to say that all the
