Congratulations to Abilene Gaels
Congratulations are in order to the St. Joseph’s high
school Gaels. They really have a great ball club and de-
served to win. They came through with using only six
players and had only one man put off the court on fouls.
Denis, center, was the high scorer of the league with 52
points. He had great support in the rest of his team-
mates. Marion, guard, played a great floor game through-
out the tournament and was high point man in the cham-
pionship final against Central scoring 13 points, the last
two of which gave the Gaels the pennant. Dobbs, the
other guard, played a consistently steady game and came
through with several points when they were needed. Cap-
tain Moore and Pee, the forwards, worked the ball for
all they were worth and carried out some swell blocking
and passing assignments. All in all, they had a great
team and we hope some of them can come down here to
enter school next semester.
Central Shows Great Form and Fight
That final game of the tournament was easily the best
of the whole bunch and well worth the admission. Central
displayed a team of well co-ordinated players, none of whom
were outstanding the whole tournament, but all of whom
shone at various times. Rubiola gave a great performance
in the last game in holding Denis of Abilene to only 7
points. Jackson, Carter, McBrearty, and Richter also de-
serve great commendation for their parts the whole way.
They’ve got a great team and we would liked to have seen
them win. Well, anyway they still have a chance at the
Southwest Acaedmic loop title. GO GET IT!
Victoria figures in a couple of facts. Their outstand-
ing player was the smallest player of the tournament, Bob
Miori. Also the fewest fouls committed by any team in the
tournament was Victoria in the game against Denison: 4.
The most fouls made in any one game was 24 when Central
played Victoria in the semifinals. The lowest number of
fouls in any one game was 12 in the Central-Beaumont
game.
Individuals Shine in Tournament
There were several spots in the tournament that are
worthwhile remembering and here are a few:
In the first round play, Central against Beaumont,
Nolan, later placed on the all-star team, not only held
Jackson scoreless throughout the game, but also helped
to bottle up Carter in the second half as well.
St. Henry’s of San Antonio was the highest scoring
team of the tournament, scoring 154 points in three
games against Kirwin Memorial of Galveston, St. Joseph’s
of Abilene, and St. Joseph’s of Victoria. Inselman of St.
Henry’s was second in the individual scoring with 48
points against Denis of Abilene with 52 points.
The breaking point in the close game between Cen-
tral and Beaumont was the failure to cover Richter on a
throw-in from the sidelines with but a few minutes left
to play and the score tied. However, Beaumont sported
one of the best passing teams in the tournament.
To win, Abilene had to beat out Central Catholic, St.
Henry’s, and St. Joseph’s of Dallas, the second, third, and
fourth place winners.
English and Gill refereed all all eleven games of the
tournament and did a great job of it. The contestants all
gave a big hand to them after the last game.
Thanks to Trophy Donors
And I might add a word of thanks to the donors of
the trophies presented to the winners. Charles Hanavan,
the Knights of Columbus, Radio Station KABC, The
Southern Messenger and Friends of the University. These
helped to finish off the tourney in fine fashion, and were
really worth while playing for. I think the recipients
really appreciated them.
Baseball Practice Goes on at the U
Dodging in and out of bad days, the baseball aspir-
ants have had a hard time making their workouts,
but are managing to get them in every now and then.
There are quite a number of promising tryouts and Coach
Simms has made several contacts for games in the near
future.

THE GYM
St. Henry’s Hornets
Bow to St. Joseph’s
Gaels; Denis Shines
Opening the play Saturday
morning, the Abilene Gaels took
the St. Henry’s Hornets over the
fire to the tune of 52-39.
The taller Gaels had everything
their way with the short Hornets.
Their lead was never endangered.
Marion, guard, showed brilliantly
with his floor work and his one
hand shots from the outer ring of
the foul circle, while his running
mate, Dobbs, played more of a
background position and same into
scoring position relatively few
times, usually down the center of
the court for short shots from the
front of the basket, however miss-
ing only one.
Denis, lanky center for the
Gaels, was at his best, scoring 24
points, mostly one hand reverse
shots, equally effective with either
hand. Moore and Pee worked hard
in blocking and passing assignments
to Marion and Denis. For St.
Henry’s, Inselman and Rodriguez
were the most effective with 14
and 12 points respectively. The
Hornets’ zone defense gave the
lanky Gaels little trouble, with
their looping passes and pretty
dribbling. The results of the game
placed the Abilene team in the fi-
nals, and the Hornets into the
third place final.

Kirwin High Loses
To St. Henry’s Five
The Kirwin high school Bucca-
neers of Galveston were washed
away in a flood of crazy shots
that couldn’t miss the basket by
the St. Henry’s Hornets of San
Antonio, 66-13.
Rodriquez and Inselman led the
Hornets’ fast breaking offensive
and were able to get a good many
crip shots practically unmolested.
On the other hand, the Buccaneers
showed lack of familiarity with an
indoor court, and also were puzzled
by the zone defense offered by the
Hornets. The score at the half
was 37-13.
Inselman was high point man
with 22, Rodriquez next with 12.
Whelton was outstanding for Gal-
veston with 9 points.
This game advanced St. Henry’s
in the championship round and
placed Kirwin in the consolation
round.

Frosh Lose
To Sophomores
Second-Year Men Win 35-14
In Intramural Scramble
In a crucial battle for the league
lead, the defending champion soph-
omores knocked over the leading
freshman club by the wide margin
of 21 points, 3 5-14, on the Cen-
tral floor, Thursday, February 14.
The sophs were never threatened
and displayed a brand of basketball
that made them last year’s champs.
Moynahan and Andy Obriotti were
the stars and made a total of 29
points between them, Obriotti get-
ting 16 and Moynahan 13.
It was a hard blow for the
strong freshman club to lose their
first game under the new man-
agement of Coach Mose Simms,
who was hoping for big things
from his charges. However, some-
one became confused and the frosh
found themselves with six men on
the court, much to their embar-
rassment.
The sophs were constantly on
the go and had the frosh on the
short end of a 22-4 score at the
end of the first half. With Todd,
Hightower, and J. Trussell effec-
tively bottled, the sophs made
point after point. The frosh made
their greatest bid for the lead in
the third quarter when Hightower
made two quick, successive goals.
But Moynahan made two one-hand
push shots from the sideline and
Obriotti came with a couple to
crush down the push.

Denison Boys
33-31
In a game with a slow start and
a whirlwind finish, the Denison
St. Xavier’s Mustangs lost to the
Victoria St. Joseph’s team by a
close score of 3 3-31.
The score at the half was 18-10
for Victoria. The Mustangs suf-
fered lack of condition, while the
Victoria boys played a heady floor
game but were a bit short in their
aim for the basket.
Brooks for the losers and Ward
for the winners were the individual
satellites of the contest. The re-
sults placed Victoria in the cham-
pionship round and Denison in the
consolation round.

Abilene Gaels Open
Catholic High School
Basketball Tournament
St. Joseph’s High of Dallas
Loses in Fast Game
Getting the St. Mary’s univers-
ity-sponsored Texas Catholic high
school basketball tournament off
to a fast start, the Abilene Gaels
of St. Joseph’s high piled up a big
enough lead in the first half to win
from the St. Joseph’s high school
Irish of Dallas, 41-30, even though
the Irish outscored them in the
second half 24-18.
The Gaels opened the game with
a fast breaking offense, working
the ball under the goal for easy
crip and hand shots. With Marion
working the ball to Moore and
Denis under the basket and in the
corner, the Abilene aggregation
was able to make most of their
shots sink and were leading 23-8
at the half. Pee and Dobbs show-
ed form in defensive and blocking
for the other members of their
team.
The Irish came back strong in
the second half, running in three
field goals and handling the ball
well. MacBrien and Woods of the
Irish sunk some pretty throws from
well out .in the court, one of
Woods’ from the center circle.
Romeo also found his basket eye
and began tossing them in. The
third quarter ended 33-24 in favor
the Gaels. Denis, center for Abi-
lene, was high point man with 21
points. MacBrien, Dallas center,
was runner up with 19. This game
advanced Abilene in championship
play and the Dallas team in the
consolation round.

Hornets Defeat
Victoria Quitent
The speedy St. Henry’s Hornets
had an easy time with the Victoria
St. Joseph’s high school, winning
49-12. Inselman and Rodriquez
were again high point men with 12
points apiece. The Victoria team
again suffered from lack of ability
to put the ball through the hoop.
Ward, center for Victoria, was ham-
pered by a bad cut over the eye
sustained in the semi-finals with
Central of San Antonio. Taylor
was high man with 6.

Winners; Paul Rubiola
Shines for Losers
Fighting neck and neck down
the stretch, the St. Joseph’s Gaels
of Abilene nosed out the Central
high school Buttons of San Anto-
nio. The final score was 34-32.
The last two points for St. Joseph’s
were scored in the last three seconds
of play on a long one-handed shot
from the side of the court by Bud
Marion, stellar guard who played
a great game throughout the tour-
nament.
St. Joseph’s led most of the game,
leading 18-13 at the half. In the last
quarter, the Buttons whacked at the
Gael advantage and finally closed
up the gap. Then on a short shot,
McBrearty put Central into the lead
26-25. Marion scored a field goal
for Abilene and was followed by
Rubiola’s goal for Central. With
time running short, Marion threw
a field goal and a foul shot to put
the Gaels out ahead 30-28. Jack-
son tied the count. Moore again
sent Abilene out ahead. Jackson
again tied the count with free
throws. Then right after the tip-
off, Marion tossed a long one from
almost the center which swished
through for the winning points.
Rubiola for Central played a
great game for Central, holding
the high scoring Denis to only 7
points. Marion, Dobbs and Denis
were, however, the mainstays of the
Gael attack.
