AIDS Services of Dallas’ Hillcrest
House prepares for Thanksgiving
celebration in new cafeteria
AIDS Services of Dallas provides hous-
ing and care for families and individuals
living with HIV and AIDS who are eco-
nomically disadvantaged.
Until recently, ASD's Hillcrest House,
located in Oak Cliff, didn't have a full
kitchen where residents could enjoy
meals as a community. After four years of
planning and reconstruction, the refur-
bished 1920s apartment complex finally
put the finishing touches on Hillcrest's
basement, which was transformed into a
7,800 square-foot cafeteria with a full
kitchen.
John Stephenson, coordinator of over
1,300 volunteers for ASD, is especially
excited about Hillcrest's Thanksgiving cel-
ebration.
"Finally we have a place where we can
be together as a community for
Thanksgiving. Many of the Hillcrest resi-
dents have been disowned by their fami-
lies," he says. "This is the first time they'll
be able to spend Thanksgiving as one
huge extended family together in their
new kitchen.''
Stephenson says the massive kitchen
will produce enough food for 200 people
twice a day.
The Thanksgiving celebration won't be
too elaborate, though. Stephenson says the
festivity is mainly for Hillcrest's 64 resi-
dents and a handful of volunteers.
For this j'ear's holiday season, there's
plenty of opportunities for volunteers to
get involved with ASD projects, he says.
"For the holidays, each client has a
wish list telling us exactly what they want.
Many of our clients are zero-income indi-
viduals, so this is the only time they get
anything new," he says.
With this project, ASD receives an enor-
mous amount of donations, which then
need to be matched to the clients.
"This is a great opportunity for people
to get involved," he says.
"We need people to wrap the
Christmas gifts, distribute the gifts, deco-
rate, provide food for the Christmas party.
We need people to dress up as Santas, we
need carolers ..." T
