William Haines. William Haines was one of MGM's
biggest matinee idols in the 1920s, but his openly gay
lifestyle was at odds with his all-American screen image.
When studio boss Louis B Mayer demanded that he tone
down his flamboyant off-screen escapades and dump his
long-time lover for a "beard" marriage, Haines refused.
Effectively blackballed by the industry in the '30s, Haines
went on to reinvent himself as a top interior decorator,
working for the likes of Joan Crawford, Alfred and Betsy
Bloomingdale, and Ronald and Nancy Reagan. (1:00) AMC
