Ruben Ramirez is the Latino health programs coordinator for the Resource Center of Dallas.
He supervises the organization’s outreach to Latino gay men. Ramirez notes that 15 percent of
the organization’s client base is Latino, and about 40 percent of them were bom in countries
other than the United States. He said that outreach to Dallas’ Latino gay community is often
complicated by language and other cultural barriers.
Is Hie Latino gay population increasing in proportion to the overall increase of Latino people
in Texas?
I believe that more Latinos are becoming more open. Before, when there wasn’t as much pres-
ence of the GLBT life on television and in other media, they would probably just stay closeted.
How good of a job is Dallas' GLBT community doing in reaching out to the gay Latino com-
munity?
MM(e doing the best we can. When you are talking about a country like Mexico, some are com-
ing from lives that are very spartan and rural. It’s sometimes tough for them. What we can do
is educate ourselves, because culture and religion play a big part in their not coming out.
Do Latino gays show much resistance to joining the GLBT community?
%Q»be do have some resistance to it, because they don’t know what it involves being “out.” They
believe being out is one of the prerequisites for participating in the GLBT community, when
that’s not necessarily hue, because you can enter and leave the community if you want.
is the outreach to gay Latino men so important?
I hUieve that there is a large Latino GLBT community that we don’t know about that needs this
outreach, because otherwise they would stay in their circumstances that are sometimes delete-
rious to their own lives. For example, some kids would be kicked out of their homes if they
mentioned they were gay.
Is it more difficult for Latinos and Latinas to come out than other minority community mem-
isr
Thele are challenges for all. I don’t see where it would be more difficult, but it is as difficult.

the GLBT community. It features those who often go unnoticed by the press and community. If you'd like to recommend
