State Senator Barbara Jordan
of Houston will speak in
Greenville Tuesday as the guest
of the Hunt County Democratic
Women's Club.
Senator Jordan will be at a
reception at the Cadillac Hotel's
Fleetwood Room at 7:30 p.m.,
with her address at about 8:15
p.m.
She was elected Texas state
senator from District 11 in 1966
a n d was unopposed for
reelection for a four-year term
which began in 1969.
Senator Jordan, the first
Negro to serve in the Texas
Senate since 1883 and the first
Negro woman Senator ever in
Texas, is chairman of the Labor
and Management Relations
Committee. She also serves as
vice chairman of the Privileges
and Elections Committee in
addition to being a member of
several other committees in-
cluding State Affairs, Finance,
Education, Jurisprudence,
Legislative, Congressional and
Judicial Districts, Public
Health, Mulitary and Veterans
Affairs and Youth Affairs.
She has the distinction of
being the first Negro to preside
over - the Texas Senate, first
Negro woman to preside over
a state senate in the United
States, and first Negro to chair
a major wmmittee in the Texas
Senate.
She was appointed as one of
five Senators to the Texas
Legislative Council, research
arm of the Texas Legislature,
for the 1967-68 interim. Senator
Jordan, who was reappointed
for the 1969-70 interim, is the
first freshman Senator ever
named to the council since its
creation in 1949.
A practicing attorney, she has
Advisory Committee on Science
and Technology and the
taught at Tuskegee Institute,
Ala., and has lectured at the
university of Houston, South
Texas College, Rice University,
University of Cincinnati, Texas
Southern University, and other
governmental and public ser-
vice organizations across the
United States. She also served
as an administrative assistant
to the Harris County judge in
1965.
Senator Jordan is a member
of the State Bar of Texas, the
American Bar Association, the
Texas Trial Lawyers
Association, the Massachusetts
Bar, and is past president of
the Houston Lawyers
Associat)on.
Other memberships include
the Harris County Democrats
Steering Committee,
N.A.A.C.P., delegate to the
Harris County of Organizations,
United Fund, Julius C. Hester
House Foundation, Southern
Regional Council, and board
memberships of the Port City
Bank, Alley Theatre and the
National Urban League.
Past honors include being
selected by UPI in 1967 as one
of the top 10 most influential
women in Texas, named by
President Johnson to the
Commission on Income Main-
tenance Programs in 1968, a
three year term as member of
the Regional Advisory Com-
mittee % the Regional Medical
Program of Texas under the
University of Texas System,
delegate to the 1968 Democratic
N a t i o n a 1 Convention, and,
chairman of the Government
Group of the Society for the
Performing Arts Science
Building Committee in Houston
in 1968.
She is serving as the 1970
permanent chairman of the1
State Democratic Convention,
chairman of the Study Com-
mittee and Citizens Advisory
Com missIon on Vocational
Rehabilitation Planning for the
State of Texas, member of the
council of State Governments'
Executive Committee of the
National Democratic Policy

chairman of the Advisory
Committee of the Public Service
Careers Program and the
lI 'i, Environmental Health Com-
mittee of the Council of State
Governments, Southern Con-
ference.
