Sen Jordan
backs bid
for taxing
State Sen Barbara Jordan
said in a statement issued
Saturday that the public
should approve a new antipol-
lution agency's bid for taxing
power.
The Gulf Coast Waste Dis-
posal Authority is asking for
permission to levy a property
tax of up to 10 cents per $100
in a referendum Nov 3.
Roy Hatch, authority presi-
dent, read Sen Jordan's state-
ment to about 60 persons at
an open forum on the tax pro-
posal held in Webster.
"I think the time has come
for us to cut through the
emotionalism and the rhetoric
that surrounds the environ-
mental issue," she said.
"We must decide whether
the community is ready to
make a commitment of mon-
ey to find solutions to the
problem of pollution."
HOUSTON POST

U.S. Rep Bob Eckhardt also
endorsed the tax proposal in
a written statement arguing
the agency can get the job
done more quickly and more
economically than other
means.
Nassau Bay Mayor Gene
Smith argued approval of the
tax will save money for the
taxpayer in the long run.
M r s Clare Schweickart,
wife of astronaut Russell
Schweickart, said the condi-
tions in the Clear Lake and
Galveston Bay amount to an
"emergency."
"We helped make it dirty.
We should help pay to clean
it up," she said.
