day, July 13. Cookies and punch
were served to the group which

Handy, Linda Fortenberry, Mar-
tha Stover, Bobby Haley, Mickey
Harris, and Jay Baugh.

“Some sixty-five students at-
tended the dance sponsored by the
Catholic Youth Organization of
Our Lady of Refuge Catholic
Church,” according to C.Y.O.
President Jonette Whitlow. The
dance was held in the church au-
ditorium from eight until twelve
Friday night.
Bob and Bill Malaise are final-
ly home for the summer.
The Malaises arrived here Sat-
urday from summer school at A&
M where they are enrolled.
Sarah Kay Handy, of Beeville,
spent last week visiting her cou-
sin, Richard Long.
Mrs. Marie Carroll and Miss
Mae Thomas will attend a Read-
ing Conference at the University
of Houston July 5-27.

Jury 17, 1936
The figure of a young Texas
revolutionary soldier, done in
bronze, will be erected in Refugio,
according to a dispatch from Dal-
las. The statue will be a memorial
to Amon B. King and his men,
and is to stand approximately 28
feet high, probably in King Me-
morial Park.
Gordon Chadwell, the small
son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Chad-
well, has been reported as recov-
ering nicely from an attack of
malaria in Beeville.
Mrs. Ida M.. Loman of Refugio
is one of the writers whose work
is included in “The Year Book of
Contemporary Poetry — 1936”, a
poetry anthology which has just
been published. More than 4,000
authors submitted poems for the
book in which her poems are
printed, but only a limited num-
ber were accepted.

Richard Johnson, Joe Dennis
and Marshall Simpson are here
this week until Friday on a nine-
day leave from the naval training
school in San Diego, California,
which they entered the latter part
of May of this year.
Mrs. Jack Lutenbacher and little
son Curtis, of Goliad are spending
a few days in Blanconia with her
sister, Mrs. Joe M. Sullivan and
family.
A “scavenger hunt” was given
by the Catholic Youth Organiza-
tion on Thursday evening of last
week. Two couples, Miss Margie
Rea and Milton Underwood, and
Miss Beata Shaw and Howard
Boc'hat tied for the prize.
Melvin (Pee-Wee) Sugarek,
local grid star, gained fame as a
softball star at Beeville Tuesday
night on the Alamo Iron Works
team of Corpus Christi. The team
met the Beeville All-Stars in play.

IMiss Emma Huddleston was
elected president of the Refugio
Chamber of Commerce at the re-
gular meeting of the organization
held Wednesday night, July 17, in
the city club rooim. Carter Snooks
was reelected secretary and Sam
White, treasurer.
The surfacing of the west curve
of the “Y” between Federal High-
way No. 77 and State Highway
No. 113 has been authorized by
the State Highway Department ac-
cording to a message fc- D. C.
Greer State Highway Engineer.
Mrs. J. O. Linney marked the
ninth birthday anniversary of her
son, Vincent, with a children’s par-
ty at Salt Creek Ranch, where the
family is spending the summer
months
Pouring of the concrete piers on
the Blanco bridge crossing on
Highway 202 started this week.
This bridge is the structure to be
erected on the Refugio Coun-
ty part of 202.

Charles Kret and Scotty Linney
were honorees at a birthuay par-
ty given Wednesday, July 19 at
Bettye Joyce Wilkinson’s home.
Freddie Nash returned home
last week after spending a month
in Humble, Texas, working and
visiting with his aunt.
Pvt. John P. Neely, son of Mr.
and Mrs. John Neely of Refugio,
was recently graduated from the
basic airborne course of the In-
fantry School as a qualified para-
chutist according to an announce-
ment by Major General John H.
Church, commandant.
Karl Snooks, Boy Scout Troop
72 Refugio, is attending the final
week of the 1951 summer camp
at Camp Karankawa, near Math-
is.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Nelson of
Austwell this week announced the
engagement and approaching mar-
riage of their daughter Carol Lois,
to Robert Heard, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wilson Hoard, Jr. of Refu-
gio. The marriage has been set
for September 8 in Our Lady of
Refugio Catholic Church.

Dr. J. E. Bauer has been elect-
ed permanent president of the
Copano Fish and Game Protec-
tive Association at a meeting
held Tuesday night, July 17.
Mary Ann Edwards, Shirey Phil-
lips, and Donna Jean Turner left
Monday to attend a Methodist as-
sembly for intermediates at Mt.
Wesley in Kerrville.
Reynol Jaso was elected presi-
dent of the Junior G. I. Forum
at a meeting Thursday, July 12.
Other officers elected are Mary
Menchaca, vice - president; Mary
Helen DeLeon, secretary; Martha
Trevino, treasurer-reporter; and
Junior Cantu, sergeant-at-arms.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Simpson
announce the engagement and ap-
proaching marriage of their
daughter Dorothy Adele to Alan
Doyle Turner, son of M,r. and
Mrs. Doyle Turner of Muleshoe.

C. T. Weir and (Miss Emma
Huddleston left Monday morning
for Dallas and Temple. Miss Hud-
dleston stopped at Temple for an
eye examination and Mr. Weir
went on to Dallas to attend busi-
ness. They will return Thursday.
• Visitors in the R. E. Claybrook
home last week included her sis-
ter, Mrs. DeLessie Elliott of Glen-
flora and her cousin, Mrs. Lucille
Taylor of El Campo. Friday even-
ing the guests were honored with
a patio dinner at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Vance E. Claybrook. Mr.
and Mrs. J. W. Ellis also attended
the dinner. The Clay'orooks and
their guests went to Corpus Chris-
ti Saturday to sight-see.
