Island Construction Co. workers check the depth of a manhole coveron Alister at Oakes streets as they
move toward finishing the street repaving project. While the streets were being patched and resurfaced,
marks were left where the water valve and manhole covers were located so they could be cut out and
raised to street level. City manager Tom Brooks said the stripes should be painted on Cotter and Alister

Anyone who wouldlike to perform
in the Cabaret Show is welcome to
sign on.
The show, presented by the Port
Aransas Community Theatre, will be
July 11 and 12.
"Participation is free for anyone who
would like to sit on stage and ham it
up," said Leslie Willey Jr. Anyone
who would like to perform is asked to
call Willey at 749-5709.
Admission will be $5 for adults and
$3 for children under 13. The show
will be at the outdoor stage at White
and Alister streets.
'Under Milkwood'
auditions slated
for next week
Auditions for "Under Milkwood", a
Dillon Thomas play, will be held
Thursday and Friday, July 6 and 7.
The play will be presented Aug. 17
through OcL 15.
The play calls for a mixed cast of
seven to 10 players. It will be directed
by John Williams.

Awards were presented during the
association’s 116th annual summer
convention held in Austin June 22-24.

category. The photo was taken by South
Jerry co-publisher Murray Judson. Two
complete issues won fourth place in
best use of photos in which judges
considered outlines, news value, com-
position, creativity and consistency.
In addition to Judson, staff photos
were taken by Janet Sobieski and
former staffer Lisa Shelton. Photos
not taken by staff members were ex-
cluded from the judging.
The South Jetty was com peting w i th
newspapers in the largest circulation
category for weekly newspapers.
“We are honored to have made a
showing considering the size and cali-
ber newspapers with which we were
competing,” Judson said.
As president of the South Texas
Press Association, Judson is a mem-
ber of the TP A board of directors and
attended that board's semi-annual
meeting at the start of the convention.
Co-publisher Mary Judson was re-
elected to a three year term on the
Texas Newspaper Foundation board
of directors which met during the TP A
convention. She also served as chair-
man of the TP A nominating commit-
tee, an appointment made by Dick
Richards, publisher of the Aransas
Pass Progress, who completed his term
as TPA president during the conven-
tion.
The convention featured sessions
on personnel, carpal tunnel syndrome,
the internet, classified advertising and
apublishcrs’ round table. Among key-
note speakers was State Rep. Layton
Black of Goldthwaite reporting on the
just-ended session of the Texas Legis-
lature. James A. “Andy” Collins, ex-
ecutive director of the Texas Depart-
ment of Criminal Justice, talked about
crime in Texas. John Irvin of Tulsa,
Ok la., an expert on humor as therapy,
livened up the final luncheon by dem-
onstrating some of his techniques on
the TPA brass.
The association will hold its 117th
summer convention in Galveston next
June.
