Phone calls have been pouring
in from taxpayers who have
received delinquent 1981 tax
bills and who believed them to
be paid, according to Cathy
Epps, tax collector.
“Many accounts do have a
delinquent balance for 1981, due
to the fact that two separate
billings were made last year,
and most people only paid the
first one,” Epps said.
The majority of the confusion
stems from the fact that tax-,
payers paid for their water and
school board taxes, which they
received in October, but did not
pay the city tax, which they
received in December.
“Many people thought the
second statement was just a
copy of the first one and threw it
away,” Epps said.
The statements were identical
except that the first statement
had figures in the water and
school tax columns and was
stamped with the words, “City
of Port Aransas taxes will be

mailed at a later date.” The city
tax rate had not been set when
the first statements were sent
out.
These statements were mailed
to the taxpayers unless they
were to be paid through a
mortgage company. The mort-
gage company would have then
received the statement and a
copy was sent to the taxpayer.
The copy was stamped with the
words “The original of this
statement was requested by your
mortgage loan company. This
copy is for your information
purposes only.”
To add to the confusion, many
people who received these state-
ments mailed a check in to the
tax office, making a double
payment.
‘ ‘ Unfortunately, some mort-
gage loan companies also ne-
glected to pay heed to the
second tax statement and the
delinquent statements were
mailed to the taxpayer, not the
loan companies,” Epps said.
The city tax statement looked
very much like the first one, but
had figures in the city column,
and none in the other two,
unless they had not been paid.
Taxpayers who have their
mortgage company pay the taxes
should contact the company
first, not the tax office, and
forward the tax information on
the delinquent statement.
Some taxes were paid at the
last minute of deadline, accord-
ing to Epps.
“On Tues., June 1, we
received an envelope from First
Texas Savings Association con-
taining 94 statements with a
check in the amount of
$26,150.45,” Epps said.
The 94 taxpayers whose pay-
ment came in that envelope have
received delinquent statements,
as they crossed in the mail,
Epps said.
Much of the confusion will be
avoided when the Port Aransas
tax office takes over the entire
process and statements are
mailed by Epps and not by M.A.
Cage, of the county tax as-
sessors office in Corpus Christi.
Next year, we will try to mail
a second notice to the taxpayer
before a delinquency occurs,”
Epps said.
Deputy constable
to appear in court
Chai-ges have been filed with
the City Cleric against Claude
Brown, a deputy constable in
Port Aransas.
The charges, filed by Lee
Bloetscher, charge Brown with
discharging a firearm within the i
city limits. According to;
Bloetscher the constable fired a
gun twice at a dog while she,
her daughter and grandson were
in their yard near the dog but
obscured from Brown.
The case is set for trial June
21 at 8 a.m. in the municipal
court presided over by Judge
Duncan Neblett.
According to Constable Dee-
Wayne Mathews Brown will
remain on duty until the case
comes to trial.
‘Tm not going to take any
action till the case is disposed
of,” said Mathews.
Mathews also said that Brown
had told him that he felt the dog
was endangering a child in his
own yard and he had already
run the dog off once without
success.
