CEDAR HILL TODAY
Utility
From Page 1
Sims has been talking to
representatives from TXU
Energy about how to lower util-
ity bills, but residents of Cedar
Hill can do their part by donat-
ing a dollar or two on their next
electric bill by following the
instructions on the back of the
bill.
Whatever is donated goes to
the ZIP Code on the bill. TXU
has pledged $5 for every $1
donated.
The Cedar Hill School Dis-
trict recently donated enough
money to cover nearly two
months’ worth of utility bills,
Kirkland said.
“Cedar Hill has some amaz-
ing people,” she said. “We
appreciate Kim Lewis and the
Cedar Hill ISD.”
Eighteen boxes are spread
around town for the food
pantry, either for food or cash
donations, located at several
banks, the school district,
Northwood and other business-
es, Kirkland said.
Charles Peyton, an invest-
ment counselor with the
Edward Jones office in Cedar
Hill, gave Kirkland a list of
potential donors to pursue.
“I’ve been amazed by the
response,” Kirkland said.
Kirkland’s efforts have
helped ease Sims’ workload,
and now she’s applying for a
grant to hire another part-time
assistant.
“Another assistant would
free me to spend more time in
public,” Sims said. “If people
don’t see me, if I’m spending
time mopping floors and stock-
ing shelves, they aren’t going to
know what we need.”
In addition to food, Sims
also takes in damaged items
from various stores to distribute
to needy people.
“We’re not going to let any-
thing go to waste,” she said.
“We’re going to make sure it’s
cleaned up, fixed up and donat-
ed to somebody.”
In addition, the food pantry
gets enough bread that it can
donate some to non-profits in
Midlothian and Hutchins, and
what’s left over goes toward a
shelter in Dallas.
The food pantry has spon-
sored nutrition classes before
and wants to branch out into
classes on things such as how
to efficiently heat and cool
homes and manage a bank
account.
Ideally, Sims would like to
see all of the area’s non-profits
band together to help the area’s
needy.
“Instead of doing our own
thing, let’s go around and make
it work for everybody,” she
said, adding that she has direct-
ed senior citizens toward Cedar
Hill’s Senior Center.
“We have a fantastic Senior
Center here,” she said. “They
have card games, line dancing,
and they can go shopping. They
say they can’t drive, but they
have buses.
“Keeping active is the key.”
