AUGUST 10, 1978
You have heard it said “the pen
is mightier than the sword”, but
did you know that playwright
Edward Bulwer Lytton expressed
that philosophy in an 1839 play?
What’s more, he likely borrowed
the phrase from Robert Burton
who, in the early 1600’s, wrote:
Hinc quam sic calamus saevior
ense patet. “The pen worse than
the sword.” Illustrating the survi-
val of a thought, I have to tell you
that my old friend Plutarch,
writing about 100 A.D. said it this
way: “Pyrrhus was used to say
that Cineas had taken more towns
with his words than he with his
All of this by way of easing into
a personal bit of dialogue.
Since using a sword is considered
somewhat illegal, I’m depending
on my pen to get you out to the
polling place this Saturday. My
pen and your conscious pride in
being a voting citizen of our
I’m probably gonna wish I could
have borrowed a sword!
Would it help any to remind
you and me that, just as public
office is a public trust so is the
right to vote. And it is a disgrace
that so many of us so often fail
the trust given us.
At issue Saturday is the matter
of a Home Rule Charter for the
City of Port Aransas. A cross-
section of citizens, elected by
their peers, worked long hours
over many months in writing this
After agonizing, sometimes
heated, debate and soul-searching
discussions, the commission (with
14 members) produced a document
that it unanimously recommends
to the city. The City Council, after
. studying the charter and hearing
the commission report, unani-
mously endorses it.
At the public meeting to answer
questions and offer explanations
of various parts of the lengthy
charter, no serious objections
were raised. Most of the handful
who came out were pleased and
All in all, it seems fairly certain
the proposed charter will be
approved Saturday. And maybe I
should be satisfied. But I’m not.
I am proud to live in Port
Aransas. To be a part of a unique
community that has a rich history,
an exciting present, and promise
of a fulfilling future.
I yearn for you and you and you
to share that pride.
To express it with a resounding
yes vote for an historical document
which will enable us to have a
true Home Rule, expanded capa-
city to rule our own destiny, and
more efficient means of community
decision-making reflecting grass-
We will have a heavy voter
turnout - if you turn out.
Maybe you don’t have to get as
serious about it as Daniel Webster
who, in the course of a political
debate, declared: “Sink or swim,
live or die, survive or perish, I
give my hand and my heart to this
But it wouldn’t hurt!
P.S. The voting will be held at
