-Our 70th Year——
LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS
Dear Members,
Some of you good people did not at-
tend the last meeting and you were
missed. I suppose some of you were
exhausted from the two previous
nights. You certainly showed good at-
tendance at the film, “Czechoslovak-
ia.” Watching all of you there was a
joy. So many senior citizens were rem-
iniscing as familiar scenes appeared.
Then Saturday night, most of you got
in a dancing mood, listening to the
good music by the Music Masters of
Ennis. It was great! Needless to say,
after waltzing half the night we
could hardly expect everyone to show
up for the business meeting, but being

THE BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO
On Apríl 21, 1836, 131 years ago, the
Battle of San Jacinto, in what is to-
day the statě of Texas, was fóught be-
tween the forces of General Santa An-
na of Mexico and an army of Texans
under Sam Houston. Two months pre-
viously, Santa Anna had massacred the
defenders of the Alamo, a mission at
San Antonio, and then marched east-
ward toward San Jacinto. Here he was
met by the Texans and defeated. rec-
ognizing the indcpendence of Texas
with boundaries extending south to the
Rio Grande. Shortly after this battle,
whieh was the culmination of a long
struggle on the part of Texas to win
its řreedom from Mexico, a constitution
was drawn up and General Houston
eiected first president of the new re-
publie. The city of Houston, which was
settled shortly after the battle and
within a few miles of San Jacinto, was
made the eapital. Nině years later, in
1845, Texas became a statě of the
Union. The anniversary of the Bat-
tle of San Jacinto is a Texas holiday.
The San Jacinton battleground is now
a statě park of about 460 acres, con-
taining an impressive monument and
museum.
