The Humble Beginnlng of the SPJST,
. More than 76 years ago, a smáli group
of men met on the front steps of the
Fayette County Courthousci in La
Grange, Texas, to work aut a commu-
inity problém, Their prime purpose
■was to organize a society to promete
fraternal and sociál activities and to
provide financial assistance to widows
; ;anď orphans who were leťt virtually
penniless whem their husbands and fa-
thers passed away.
Thus on July 1, 1897, the tilu vonic
Benevolent Ordcr of the State of Texas
(SPJST) was conccived and brought
into being; its purpose was to promote
the ideals of human Service among a
segment of people who came to this
country to establish a new home. Those
'early pioneers were motivated by the
same spirit that spurred on the early
settlers. Their wisdom in the selection
of the fundamental principles upon
which the Society was founded and
their unity of purpose is uttested to by

its growth and development during the
76 years of the Society’s existence.
From humble beginnings, through
years of expansion and mergers, wars
and depressions, the organization has
been walcied into a ťraternal benefit
society that has many years of praise-
worthy Service in the fielci of fraternal
life insurance, and the many, many
activities . held in about 180 active
iodges throughout the statě.
The motto-motivating: force,1 of the
SPJST has become a part of this great
country of ours . . . peaceably Progres-
sive with the betterment upliftt ever
present. Just like the words “freedom”
and “liberty” are both the motivating
forces of our way ot; life, so “Benevo-
lence, Humanity, and Brotherhood,”
which are the mottos of the SPJST,
.are the motivating forces of a pio-
neer of fraternal life insurance in Tex-
as.
Many fraternal activities in the
SPJST embrace both adults and juve-
niles. Banded together in a common
cause, members of all ages gathered
to pra cli co the virtues of charity, be-
nevolence and good sportsmansliip. The
members corne from all walks of life
and represent a cross-seclion of the
community itself. Through their Iodges
the members cooperate in. aehieving
deeds that would be impossible or very
difficult for any individua! to achieve
alone. The attributes of fraternalism
. . . the undetrstanding and considera-
tion of others . . . are much in evidence
án the Iodges and the newly-organized
distríct youth clubs, which are made
up of juveníles who are thus provided
with opportunities for leadership, com-
panionsliip, and sociál contacts. The
preservation of the best traditions of
citizenship is encouraged.
The various activities which are pro-
vided in the SPJST are many and
varied. There are many contests and
activities held on the local, district and
statě levels which enjoy a. huge in-
terest. There are qualified staffs which
teach the lessons of obediencc, love
and Service, together with palnolism
