rl he more teohnical and sophisticat-
ed become our achievements, the less
seeure is oiu* position. Character is
more importani, tlian ever before. The
woxid of tornoítow is not going to oí-
far an easy hře, aithough it may bring
shorter work days and weeks and long-
er vacations. Our obligations wiil in-
creass as our jjosiiian improves. Faii-
me to do whaťs right and to do our
duty when the nced arises wili be íol-
lowed by a quick and inevitatale erash.
1 here is no alternativě. Honesty, fair-'
nass, and honor are absolutely essen-
tial. These traits must be cuitivated in
the iiome and in the sehooi. Subťerfuge
and expedient triekery wili meet with
inevitable failure, aithough they may
enjoy temporary success. The good
things of life do not iong remain in the
control of those who are unfit to use
tilem.

Lite Insurance in T8. The life insur-
ance business wiil feel many of the
pressures that affect the generál eco-
norny next year. Nevertheiess, the fu-
ture of our business and the market
for life Insurance look bright indeed.
The upward trend of personál ineome,
plus the American family’s inereasing
dependence on the breadwinner’s wages
or salary mean that families wili need
more and more life insurance to pro-
téct their standard of living. Ověř the
past decade, the average amount of
life insurance per American family
has risen twice as fast as their dis-
posable ineome.
Nor has our business yet fclt the reál
impact of the post-WW II “baby boom”
on present-day family formations. The
years immediately ahead should bring
a Sharp upturn in marriages among
postwar youngsters. The incrcase is
running later than expected, undoubt-
■edly because of military obligations
facing young men, as weil as the larg-
er numbers of young people pursuing
higher education. But there are signs
that the number of family formations
is starfcing to rise. This should partie-
ularly affect our business because dur-
ing the early years of family life, when
chilclren are growing up, families need
large amounts of life insurance pro-
tection. It is estimated that, if present
trends continue, Americans wiil buy
more than $140 billion of life insur-
ance during 1968, and the total amount
in force in the United States may
reach $1.15 trillion a year from now.
This week’s quips: Nothing ruins a
class reunion like the fellow or lady
who has managed to stay young-look-
