on May 4th, the anniversary of the
tragic death of General Milan Stefanik,
Slovák soldier-patriot, by the Hon-
orable Edward J. Derwinski, represent-
Ing the 4th Congressionai District,
State of Illinois. The Vestnik has pub-
lished other íeature artieles on Gen.
Stefanik and other Czechoslovak lead~

“Mr. Speaker, to,day we pause in
memory o the tragic death of General
Milan Stefanik, who certainly would
háve been a major figuře in any na-
tion. It is one of the tragedies of his-
tory that he was only able to claim a
nation as his own for ju:st a few years
prior to his death.
“General Stefanik was boru. in Slo-
vakia, which was imder foreign domi-
nation then as it is now. He v/as raised
in a scholarly atmosphere and re-
ceived his degree as doctor of philoso-
phy fram Charles University in Prague.
Stefanik went to France in 1902 to live
in freedom and aiífcer years of struggle
he achieved great distinction as an
astronomer and did valuable research
in Africa, the Americans, Europe and
the South Seas,
€.£.M. MILAN STEFANIK
“General Stefanik became a natur-
alized French Citizen and joined the
French Air Force in 1914 when war
came to Europe. His distinguished ree-
ord resulted in him receiving new hon- ,
ors and he attained the rank of ma-
jor generál. He joined in the Czecho-
slovak National Council with Eduard
Beneš and Thomas G. Masaryk, The
independent State of Czecliosiovakia
grew out of this Council, and Stefanik
became Mínister of War. He was killed
when his plane crashed on landing at
Bratislava on May 4, 1919, where he was
retuming from a conference in Italy.
In his tragic and u.ntimely death, the
Czechoslovak Republie suffered an ir-
reparable loss ai its most gallant and
gifted soldier.
“On the oceasicn of the 46th anni-
versary of his death, I am honored to
;join my Czechoslovak friends in pay-
ing tribute to the memory of this dis-
tinguished leader of his people and
gallant .fighter for freedom and de-
mo cracy.”
