The large inerease in protection
partly reflected the fact tliat young-
steres born in the post-World War I£
“baby boom” are now reaching adult-
hood and starting their own families.1
Family responsibiíities of young hus*
bands and fathers represent the great-
est need for lile in.surance.
More liře insurance is bought by
young adults in their early 20s than au
any ofcher stage oí lile, and about 40
per cent of all “ordinary” life insurance
is issued to policyholders' from 20 to 2b
years olei.
Nearly 3.8 million younf people
reached age 21 in 1968 — t>y far the
largest nuřnber in history, and almoss
1 million higher than the previouu
year. The .1969 crop of 21-year-olds
was not far below the 1968 record.
1969 Marriages. More men get mar-
ried at 21 than at any other age, and
the number of marriages in 1969
reached 2.2 million — highest on rec-
ord silice the post-war" “marriage ex-
píosion” year of 1946.
And the number of births rose to
almost 3.6 million in 1969, or about
100,000 more babies than in 1968.
More young families, with higher in-
comes and often greater responsibi-
lities, may háve been the most irn-
portant factor behind the 1969 surge
in life insurance coverage.
However, the figures for life insur-
ance in fotce are merely a measure of
the overall risk assumed by legal re-
serve life insurance companies. The
average amount per family is probably
a more meaningful indicator of the
natioiťs protection level.
