the Czcch language in Texas, in a
school tliat is apparentiy the only one
in the whole U.S. that teaehes Czecli
for credit. We pointer! out that the
ciasses at Rogers are still using the
1936 Mikula textbook, which, incident-
ally, will come out this fall in a new
edition. We further pointed out that
statě funds are not available for the
purchase of any texts or classroom ma-
teriál for use in the Czcch course be-
cause of the State Board of Education’s
requirement that before a free text can
be supplied over 10,000 students must
be enrolled in a particular course. The
class at Rogers is very short on good
dictionaries. We asked for help. To this
day, not a single offer has come in to
clo anything to help the students at
Rogers High School.

The painful part of this entire epi-
sodě is that U.S. Senátor Ralph Yar-
borough got hold of a copy of the
Vestnik with the above story and in-
serted the entire artiele in the CON-
GRE3SIONAL RECCRD of Aug. 16th,
1965! Brother Calvin Chervenka re-
ccived copies of the Record from the
senátor, and forwarded it to us here in
West. Perhaps the Rogers School Dis-
trict can purchase these dictionaries
from their own funds, but wouldn’t it
háve been a splendid display of eon-
cern about the matter if we had re-
ceivcd 15 or 20 six-dollar contritautions
for dictionaries? I’ve heard so many
pleas and speeches about the “preser-
vation of our wonderful Czech lan-
guage/’ and that “it is being allowed to
die away.” Our inaction in the Rogers
čase makes all that sound a bit hollow.
I think the Senátor aetecl in good
faith, but do we really deserve it?
Actions speak louder than words, bnt
in this čase, we scorcd a big fat zero.

There was a time — not so long ago,
that liře in our American society was
a good deal simpler than it is today.
There was also a time when it appear-
ed that human qualities appeared more
definable, either this or that. Time
was when currents of national pride
fiowed. through us all a good deal
stronger than they do today. Our
younger generation cannot rccall this
bygone era of intense national feeling
ancl pride. A lot of us do, however.
Still, few of us are naivě and idealistic
enough to want to retům forever “to
the good cle’ days.” We do believe,
though, that it is becoming inereas-
ingly neeessary to re-arouse, re-awak-
en the qualities and feelings that were
so prevalent in the earlier years of
this century ancl which prevaded the
