FROm THE EDITOR
There’s a familiar saying, “An-
other day, another dollar,” and
with the weeks, iťs another week,
another issue. Time incessantly
rolls on, how true, and some
weeks become rather heetic for
their momentům; surely all of us
experlence £hem. Definitely, all
of us háve made plans to do
something and a stroke of fate
changes them immediately. Thafc
is definitely the čase with the news
business — TV, rádio, and news-
páper; and yet, there is that vard~
pressed deadline to meet. One can
hardly imagine what a madhouse
the editorial Office of a daily news-
páper must be when the last edi-
tion of the day is approaching and
a late-breaking news story is Corn-
ing into the news room! Editors
and workers in those offices must
háve control of their nerveš, emo-
tions and tempers beyond reproach
and the ability to remain calm. As
a young man in 1939 (nearly 40
years ago) this editor made a visit
to the Office and printing depart-
ment of the Houston Chronicle
and had a first-hand impression
of what printing a daily newspaper
consisted of. It was a weekday
and they were printing the Sunday
“comics” for the next weekend
and preparing the last headlines
for that day’s last issue. Sud-
denly there was a man rushing by,
said something to the pressman,
and then rushed off. The press-
man told me that there was a
change in the headlines because
of latě news. The press was run-
ning on, steadily, however, a walk
up the stairway to the floor above
showed a much different scene:
everyone was methodically doing
what had to be doně, by telephone,
setting copy, changing spaces, etc.,
and everyone remained calm.
Imagine what it is like now, 40
years later, with electronic tech-
nology, computers, and satellite
Communications, plus the pressure
of competition! No thank you, a
weekly deadline is enough, much
less a daily or three or four a day!
