It Was a Busy Week
This was certainly a week for news in
the SPJST.
This week’s cover story goes into
some detail on the new lodge recognitíon
and incentive pian adopted by the
Supreme Lodge last week. The pian,
which is designed to build membership
and stimulate local lodge activity, was
unveiled by Supreme Lodge President
Howard Leshikar at the Local Lodge
Workshop held at Lodge 177, Academy
on Saturday, March 13.
After having some time to study the
the pian and discuss
it with some of our
officers and a good
many of those who
attended the work-
shop, I must say that
the new pian does
look promising.
In a nutshell,it
defines the interde-
pendency of our
Society’s fraternal
and financial opera-
tions. Then, it seís to
establish an incentive
systém, whereby
local lodges, in
essence, will receive
bonuses for achieving a healthy balance
of fraternal interaction and new member
activity.
Iťs that simple—but, will it work?
It will, provided that we give it a
chance to work. Certainly, it will impact
each lodge in a different way. For lodges
with strong fraternal programs and a lot
of active sales representatives, it should
be a relatively easy task to achieve at least
some degree of merit award. For less
active lodges, it will be a little more of a
challenge. The added incentive of receiv-
ing a thousand dollars—or more—to
apply towards their fraternal program,
will be an attractive incentive for mem-
bers to maintain an active calendar of
events and to provide their sales represen-
tatives with leads for new members.
Finally, there is a third category of
lodges out there—leťs call them the
“active” inactives. For some of them, the
new pian may seem like so much “pie in
the sky.” Lodges that haven’t added a
dozen new members over the last five
years may wonder what the new pian
holds for them. If you are an optimist,
then it holds a promise for the future.
More than that, it provides lodge officers
and trustees with the perfect reason to
contact their district director or Supreme
Lodge officers and ask, “Hey, what can
we do to make this program work for us?”
Then what happens? Iťs difficult to
say. Iťs at that point that a lot of intangi-
bles come into play. Things like commit-
ment. Things like initiative and innova-
tion. Things like perseverance ...
As previously stated, the new lodge
recognitíon and incentive program is basi-
cally a good pian. It may be a little rough
around the edges—but, nothing I don’t
believe, that can’t be worked out. In an
effort to more effectively address your
likes and dislikes regarding the new pian,
I would encourage readers with strong
opinions on the matter to contact their dis-

Workshop Receives High Marks
The Local Lodge Workshop was held
Saturday, March 13 at Lodge 177, Acade-
my. Approximately 240 members tumed
out for the program. In addition to that
information which we háve already cov-
ered, those in attendance participated in a
three-hour seminář on building new lodge
membership and stimulating member
activity. Leading the program was busi-
ness consultant Laurie Moore of Dallas.
For someone who was not a member of
the Society, Ms. Moore certainly did her
homework, gearing her presentation
specifically to the
challenges facing our
Society, and indeed,
the entire fraternal
systém. My compli-
ments to the Insur-
ance Department for
organizing a very
well-conceived and
informative program.
Ms. Moore’s pre-
sentation under-
scored the theme of
the new lodge recog-
nition and incentive
pian, námely that it is
our fraternal program
that separates the
SPJST from every other fraternal soci-
ety—and for that matter—every other
insurance organization. Likewise, she
delivered the message that it is important
that we work to achieve a healthy balance
of new member activity to insure the vital-
ity of our fraternal program.
Judging from the mail-in critiques that
háve staríed to come in, most of those who
attended enjoyed the program. We
enjoyed it—yes, but leťs not let it stop
there. Leťs work to apply in our local
lodges, some of the planning strategies
that Ms. Moore covered in her presenta-
tion ... I might also mention at this time
that the videotape I made during Saturday
morning’s session—which covers Presi-
dent Leshikaťs introduction of the new
lodge recognitíon and incentive program
and the first half of Laurie Moore’s pre-
sentation—is available for use by your
lodge. To obtain a copy of the tápe, please
contact either President Leshikar or Více
President Gebala at 1-800-72-SPJST

Supreme Lodge Minutes
Pages four through nine of this week’s
Vestnik include the minutes from the Janu-
ary 11-13 regular meeting of the Supreme
Lodge. Some members háve inquired
about the wait in publishing this report.
As your reportér, I can identify with your
desire to see the minutes as soon after the
meeting as possible. However, as was not-
ed in a previous issue of the Vestnik,
Supreme Lodge members voted in their
January meeting to require approval of the
minutes by the Board before printing the
minutes in the Vestnik. (See page nine of
this issue, top right column.)
Regardless of the change in proceduře,
I am compelled to acknowledge the typi-
cally fine and thorough job Supreme
Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard
Mikeska did in preparing these minutes.
As always, they provide us with an
enlightening view on matters of Society
