Incentive Banuqet
(Gontinued from page 1.)
Office. As you know, Sister Kovar gave
the $50,000 donation to the SPJST
Scholarship Fund. Of course, we will
also háve our traditional celebration cake,
baked by Judy Pecha! of Lodge 47,
Seaton.
Speciál guest tor the evening will be
Steven Chudej. A two-time Emmy
award winner for costume design, Steven
is a member of lodge 135, Ennis.
Many hours of planning and prepara-
tion háve gone into the banquet. We
háve inspired to make the evening as
entertaining and comfortablé as possible.
The banquet theme is based on the 1996
SPJST “Round-Up” Locaí Lodge
Incentive Program guideline booklet. If
there is something you would like to see
added to the annual event, or if you háve
a theme in mind, please let us know and
we will see how we can fit it into future
banquets. (The 1997 SPJST Lodge
Incentive Program will be “Community
Link” - using our communities as
resources for growth).
We look forward to seeíng you at
“Sunset on Terra Cotta Terrace” at SPJST
Lodge 47, Seaton on February 22nd.

In Support of
Higher Education
and the SPJST
Scholarship Fund
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Many of you know me, or may háve
even seen me on the front page of the
Věstník recently. I was the winner of the
Paul Newman and Good Housekeeping
Charity Recipe Contest. As the grand
prize winner, I received a check for
$50,000 to be given to my favorite chari-
ty. í chose the SPJST 100 Pennies
Scholarship Fund as the recipient of the
prize money. Several times after win-
ning, í was asked why I would enter a
contest where í would not personally
receive the prize money. My answer to
that question was, “Sure, I could háve
ušed the money to pay bills like everyone
else, but I could not háve personally writ-
ten a check for $50,000 to help a cause
that I believe in.” í feel blessed to háve
won the contest. Winning the contest has
allowed me to gíve to a cause I believe in.
I háve asked Howard Leshikar to set the
money in a perpetual fund to pay for
scholarships in the future from the inter-
est it earns. í háve requested the perpetu-
al fund in hopes of more of your children
and grandchíldren benefitting from my
blessing.
As Brothers and Sisters of the SPJST,
I know we are more than just members of
an insurance company, we share a com-
mon goal of Benevolence, Brotherhood
and Fraternalism. In the spirit of
Benevolence, Brotherhood and
Fraternalism, I ask that you answer the
call of the Home Office for donations for
the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship
Drive. This is in a sense an old-fashioned
barn raising, wherebv individuals work
toward a common goal. Educating our
young members benefits us all, directly
and indirectly. We are directly affected if
we as individuals are fořtu natě enough to
be able to attend coliege. It opens up
doors of opportunities to unlimited ťields,
or if our children or grandchíldren attend
coliege, it will alíow íhem to compete in
this ever changing technologieai world
we now all iive in. Indirectly, education
aťfects us daily, as we go to the doctor
and are treated with medical advances, or
we go on a trip to visit family. The doc-
tors care and the trip in a plane or a car
are both possible because people received
a coliege education. There was a time
when members could support their fami-
lies with very little education, that was
“back in the good old days,” but now
those days are gone.
ínvesting in a coliege education,
whether it be your own or a stranger’s
will pay itself back tenfold. I encourage
all members to donate today to the SPJST
Scholarship Fund. Be thankful to all you
háve and all you háve been given as a
result from someone receiving a coliege
education. Let us reach the goal of 100
Scholarships and be proud of what we
háve given ourselves and others by our
efforts.
Eli be looking for your names in the
Věstník under the scholarship contribu-
tors.
