Private companies offer trashy service
Too bad Browning-Fcrris Industries’ pilot program to collect household gar-
bage in Bellairc wasn’t in effect on Friday, Dec. 22. Citizens would have learned
a real lesson about what it’s like to have a private company responsible for their
trash pickup instead of a small, dedicated city department.
That was the day the Big Freeze was at its nastiest - streets snowy, icy-slick and
treacherous, temperatures frigid. Still, the Bellaire Solid Waste Department
managed to make all its household trash pickups. Two trucks were disabled by the
weather, but other city vehicles - even small pickup trucks - were pressed into
service. The workers made their way through the streets gingerly until 7 p.m., when
the last bag was loaded.
What a contrast with the private collectors! BFI - which is seeking a solid waste
contract with Bellaire and will launch a pilot program in some homes later this
month - was “unable” to make its pickups in the Houston area.
Waste Management Inc. - also interested in Bcllaire’s business mustered “a
few streets in one subdivision” before calling it quits.
In most cases, because of the holidays, if you had been serviced by those
companies - or if you had been a resident of the city of Houston, which cancelled
all garbage service on Friday - you would have gone for more than a week with your
garbage accumulating.
Even with the disabling weather, some Bellaire resident still called the Solid
Waste Department Friday to inquire why their pickup was running late. That is
indicative of how spoiled we’ve become by the high level of service offered by
Bellaire city departments. It is one of the reasons we live in Bellaire, urge others
to move here, brag about our small, caring oasis in the impersonal big city jungle.
After Dec. 22’s performance, is there any doubt that we’d be sacrificing that kind
of service by going to a huge, private solid waste company?
