The reputation and high
standing of Mi . Adams is such
that the people ot Jefferson
county may support him, know
ing that he will not be
governed by petty local preju
dices, but will be what the term
“implies, a representative, indeed
caretully guarding the interests
of the entire district, so tar as
may lay in his power. The
people of Orange county will
give to him their undivided sup
port and a hearty support in
JelfersoQ county assures him ol
election.
It is conceded by all righl
thinking and fair minded people
that Orange is entitled to the
representative and, judging
from th_* tone of the press in
Beaumont, this right will be
recognized there audit is doubt-
ful if there will be any opposi
tion whatever to Mr. Adams,
who will, at the proper time,
go before the people oi the dis
trict, outlining a policy and
waging the battles of demo
cracy.
It has required years <>! pa-
tient work, ttie expenditure of a
great deal of money, thecour
ageous facing of many disap
p »inttnents and the surmount-
ing of many obstacles to bring
about the actual beginning ol
work on the Sabine lake chan
nel, but the great work has been
accomplished, the dredges art-
now busily engaged in cutting
out the connection to the sea,
and Orange and Beaumont
particularly, may feel proud oi
the work that has been accom
plished. Of course, there is
much to be done yet before we
attain a realization ot our hopes
for deep water, but the hardest
part i s over. Government
recognition and government aid
has been secured, and Uncle
Sam does not quickly take bis
bands from the plough, once he
has started down the tow. The

A new epoch dawned for
Southeast Texas when the big
dredge began cutting out the
Sabine lake channel and the
day' when Orange shall become
a great inland harbor seems
now- nearer than ever before
The completion of the channel
under the present appropriation
will but serve to intensity the
need of a sure enough deep wa-
ter channel and this will quickl /
fol low.
Orange merchants are over
looking a golden opportunity if
hey do not make overtures to-
wards drawing to this city the
trade ot the great number of
workmen employed between the
Sabine river and the great
mines at Sulphur, La. The ops
portunitv is at hand for trade
extension; if it is not grasped no
one will be to blame but the
merchants themselves.

The Rifles promise a good

their friends out to see them.
This will be the hrst exhibition

they deserve a good ;crowd to

undertaking. The oand has
been requested to plajr largely
for the reason the members of
the Orange Rifles all wish to
