City pushes
postal site
By Nick Herrera
Bellaire city officials
are trying to persuade
the U.S. Postal Service
to build Bellaire’s new
post office in the city's
downtown area.
Last week, Bellaire
City Council approved a
resolution which states
the city would be willing
to sell a portion of a
downtown street so that
two lots fronting the
street could be
combined tp provide a
4.2-acrc site for the new
post office.
The city would sell
approximately half of
Mapleridge Street
between Dashwood
Drive and Bellaire
Boulevard.
The adjoining
properties, the site of
two medical office
buildings located at 5319
and 5401 Dashwood,
would be combined to
form the necessary
acreage for the new post
office site.
“It’s more accessi-
ble,” said Bellaire City
Planner Sara Jane
White explaining why
the city wants the post
office located down-
town. “Also, the post
office is pretty well
recognized as a retail
to the
activity generator.
“It's important

banks and any kind of
new development that
may occur down there--
residential, office, or
retail," White added.
After outgrowing
their present facility,
postal officials have
been shopping for a new
Bellaire post office site
since last June and have
narrowed down the
choices to two, said
Robert Blaes, senior real
estate specialist for the
Posiai Service.
Reportedly the Postal
Service already has an
option to buy an
approximately 4-acre
vacant lot located on the
north side of Bellaire
Boulevard, just inside
Loop 610.
The site is situated
between the Congrega-
tion Brith Shalom at
4610 Bellaire Blvd. and
the Bellaire Church of
the Nazarcne at 4638
Bellaire Blvd.
Blaes said Monday
afternoon he is waiting
on a final offer from the
owners of the Dashwood
property before he
makes a decision on the
new post office location.
"We're going to stay
open-minded until we
see the exact offer from
both sites,” Blaes
explained. “I know the
city likes that site
downtown and has
passed that resolution,
but until I get those final
offers in I can’t make a
decision.”
If the Dashwood
property is chosen as the
new post office site,
about 25 doctors,
dentists or medical
related businesses
would have to be
relocated from the two
office buildings, said E.
J. Demetriades of
Success Real Estate
Inc., who is handling the
sale of the properties.
The buildings--
Bellaire Medical Plaza
at 5319 Dashwood and
Bellaire Medical Arts
Building at 5401
Dashwood-are located
across the street from
AMI Bellaire Hospital.
“We will make
provisions for the
doctors to be relocated
in a very fair way,” said
Demetriades. “No one
will be discomforted.”
Several suggestions
have been given to
accomodate the dis-
placed tenants, Deme-
triades said, including
building a new profes-
sional building on top of
the new post office, or
on an unused portion of
the site.
If Postal Service
officials choose the
Dashwood site, they
would be required to
submit a development
plan for a new facility to
Bellaire’s Tax Increment
