Phentermine (Adipex®) is one of only a handful of adrenergics
leff available on fhe markef for weighf loss. If is approved for
shorf-ferm use only and appears fo be one of fhe mosf popular
prescripfion obesity medicafions according fo a 2009 survey of
US physician obesity specialists, despite an average weight loss
of only 3.6kg more than placebo. It is characterized by typical
side effects of the sympathomimetics including tachycardia,
anxiety and insomnia, and there have been some case reports
of stroke associated with the medication. The other main
pharmacologic class currently available includes the lipase
inhibitors, of which orlistat is the only drug available, marketed
under the trade name Xenical® and over-the-counter as Alii®.
Orlistat is associated with modest weight loss, but is better
known for its undesirable gastrointestinal side effects including
oily/fatty stool, spotting, and flatulence with discharge, which
are enough to keep most people away from this product.
Additional medications that have been used off-label for appetite
suppression include topiramate, zonisamide, fluoxetine, and
sertraline, all of which come with side effects and warnings.
