ABSTRACT
Available scientific literature and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Fisheries Division species code lists were examined for compilation of a
comprehensive list of fish, shellfish and aquatic plants indigenous to Texas.
Indigenous is defined as species that (1) are documented as occurring in Texas
public waters (including the area out to nine nautical miles in the Gulf of
Mexico); (2) are spawned, reproduce or live in Texas public waters and (3)
whose first documented occurrence in Texas public waters was not the result of
direct or indirect introduction by man. Shellfish species list was limited to
the phylum Mollusca and to the order Decapoda (class Crustacea). Compilation
of these lists reveal 572 fish species, 678 shellfish species, and 521 aquatic
plant species as being indigenous to Texas public waters.
