Corner Column
Change is good
BY DORIS NEWMAN
Big news is on our front page about
the purchase of our newspaper by a
new company and old boss. Realizing
that everything is important to those to
whom it pertains, or as a friend puts it, “it all depends on
whose ox is getting gored,” this is immensely important
in the lives all of us who work at the newspaper and our
families. But because of the newspaper’s role in the com-
munity, that importance extends to all of our advertis-
ers and to all of the people and events about which sto-
ries are written and just as importantly, to our
subscribers and readers.
We are now owned by a company run by a man, Bill
Woodall, who has lived and worked in this community
and run newspapers in this area. That factor alone tips
the scale heavily in favor of improvement of the outlook.
End of column. Period.
But, suspecting the community may be curious about
a bit more, I’ll continue.
The first non-family member to whom I gave this
news asked if this would be good or bad for us. It will be
good. As honesty is the best policy, one thing that will
change is you won’t see quite as many color pho-
tographs as in the past year or so, unless advertisers
purchase it in their ads which will allow photos on the
same page to be printed in color. That cost is basically
reverting to how much it was a couple of years ago. This
is because we’ll be printed in a plant with a smaller press
operation. After all, this is a business (albeit a communi-
ty servant) in which a company has to finagle expenses
including the ever-rising insurance and printing prod-
uct costs and come out with a profit.
But smaller can be better, and we can adjust to black
and white again. We’ll still have color for our photos on
some pages, just not nearly as many. On the other hand,
some people appreciate black and white photos better
than color anyway. They say it ehminates the distrac-
tion of the color.
Of course, new companies mean some other changes,
but as far as our readers and advertisers, nothing
should change for you, except for the better. Different
programs and ways of putting the paper together will be
used and billing operations will be handled differently.
As far as the employees, new ways of doing things can
be intimidating, and honestly I’m a little anxious, but we
know it will be better in the end. Patience as we master a
few new things will be extremely valued, both ours and
yours. One of the first changes is our email addresses
which are basically the same as the old ones, except if
you’re sending to Vicki Duke, instead of the old
vduke@etcnonhne.com, now it will be vduke@themi-
neolamonitor.com.
But on the whole, this is an exceedingly positive situa-
tion. Many in the community know Bill and know he is
an experienced and honorable newspaperman and his
wife Jessica is by his side in this endeavor. His belief in
the importance of clear and honest newspapers and
their affiliated products to a community is something I
am afraid not enough news people in today’s world seem
to understand.
His commitment to the quality of what we produce as
weh as the integrity with which he treats those who pro-
duce that product are second to none. The rest is gravy.

Social Security helps veterans (and active duty) every day

Nov. 11 is more than just
a national holiday; Veter-
ans Day is a time to honor
the men and women who
risk their lives to protect
our freedom. We at Social
Security ask you to join us
in saluting the men and
women of the armed
forces. Be sure to say
“thank you” to a veteran
on this important day.
For those who return
home with injuries, it will
be our turn to help them. If
you know any wounded
veterans, please let them
know about Social Securi-
ty’s Wounded Warriors
website. You can find it at
socialsecurity. gov/wound-
edwarriors.
The Wounded Warriors
website answers a number
of commonly asked ques-
tions, and shares other
useful information about
disability benefits, includ-
ing how veterans can re-
ceive expedited processing
of disability claims. It is im-
portant to note that bene-
fits available through So-
cial Security are different
than those from the De-
partment of Veterans Af-
fairs and require a sepa-
rate application.
The expedited process is
used for military service
members who become dis-
abled while on active mili-
tary service on or after Oct.
1,2001, regardless of where
the disability occurs.
Even active duty mili-
tary who continue to re-
ceive pay while in a hospi-
tal or on medical leave
should consider applying
for disability benefits if
they are unable to work
due to a disabling condi-
tion. Active duty status
and receipt of military pay
does not necessarily pre-
vent payment of Social Se-
curity disability benefits.
Receipt of military pay-
ments should never stop
someone from applying for
disability benefits from So-
cial Security.
A person cannot receive
Social Security disability
benefits while engaging in
substantial work for pay or
profit. However, the work
activity is the controlling
factor and not the amount
of pay the person receives
or military duty status.
Learn more by visiting
socialsecurity.gov/wound-
edwarriors.
We at Social Security
thank all veterans and
members of the armed ser-
vices for all that they do -
not only on Veterans Day,
but every day of the year.
