LIVINGSTON - Polk County
Commissioners agreed last week to
advertise for bids for eight vehicles
for the sheriff's department fleet, two
for constables and one for emergency
management. The downsized request
from Sheriff Kenneth Hammack
means his department will continue
to use 13 vehicles with more than
100.000 miles on the odometer, al-
though few of those will be front-line
patrol units.
Hammack told commissioners dur-
ing a meeting held Jan. 5 that Patrol
Division Capt. John Sanders had ini-
tially recommended 17 patrol cars be
replaced when officials were drafting
the fiscal year 2011 budget.
“We cut that back to 10. and now
down tb eight." Hammack sai<l One
of the eight is a three-quarter ton
pickup for the animal control divi-

“This will save money on trans-
porting animals to the auction barn,
where animals are impounded."
Hammack said.
Some of the high-mileage vehicles
are in the reserve fleet that deputies
use when their primary vehicles are
being serviced.
Pet. 3 Constable Ray Myers will
replace his current vehicle with a
pickup. Pet. 4 Constable Bubba Piper
will order a Tahoe since Ford has dis-
continued the Crown Victoria police
car.
Commissioners also unanimously
approved the purchase of three 40-
foot cargo storage containers for
equipment and surplus items be-
ing stored until the next public auc-
tion. County Maintenance Supervi-
sor Jay Burks said his department
needs one container to store hazard-
ous items such as fuel that can't be
kept in the shop. Another container
