BIOGRAPIY OF NAVARRO.
one to have some belief in the doctrine of fatalism and predestination.
The clearest intellect finds itself enveloped in
a cloud of conjectures on discovering all the complete links
of what appeared to be an unconnected chain of merely
casual events.
Jose ANTONIO NAVARRO died at his residence in San
Antonio the 13th of January, 1871, at half past one in the
morning, at the ripe age of 76, and was followed to his last
resting place by all the prominent citizens of his native
place, irrespective of nationality, who thus offered their
tribute of respect for the dead patriot.
He never wrote any biography of himself, or of his public
services in Texas, for he said that every one knew them,
and any literary man who thought them worthy of being
handed down to posterity, could find sufficient materials
in the archives of the State.
NAVARRO left four sons and one daughter living. He
had been a widower for seven or eight years before his
death.
The author has consented to publish the above biography
at the request of the sons, relations, and many appreciative
friends of the deceased, and although he has no
pretensions as a historian or biographer, he cannot deny
that, in aiding to rescue a life full of worthy example and
noble precepts from oblivion, he has accomplished what
he believes to be the most useful work in his power.
