Local dentist consulting on vampire movie

LIVINGSTON - Local
dentist Craig Reese has
been cast in the latest Tim
Burton movie that has Civil
War soldiers battling blood-
sucking predators — but
he’s not being consulted on
ways to defang the vampire
villains.
Reese is traveling to New
Orleans Friday to supervise
artillery troops for six battle
scenes that are being filmed
for “Abraham Lincoln:
Vampire Hunter.”
Although his work week
is spent trying to make Polk
Countians’ pearly whites
perfect, outside office hours
Reese can often be found
his group of Civil War
reenactors.
Reese, Mark Coen, James
Hendrix and Mike Farrar, all
of Polk County, will meet
with filmmaker Tim Burton
in New Orleans to plan the
battle scenes, which will be
shot this weekend, according
to Reese.
James Fox and Garrett
Glover of Mount Pleasant
have also been cast. Three
more local reenactors may be
cast as final assignments are
made, Reese said.
The local reenactors were
selected based on photographs
of them in full Civil War
regalia. They will portray
both Union and Confederate
infantry and artillery troops.
“We’ll have the only real
directing cannon fire with cannon," Reese said. “The
rest will be ‘hollywood’
cannons, so I think it will be
used in a lot of shots.
Filmmakers asked the crew
to bring their tents, cannon,
equipment and costumes
which the studio is renting
from them.
The film is based on a 2010
book by Seth Graham Smith
premised on the author’s
“discovery” of a secret journal
by the 16th president.
That journal unveils the
secret that the fatal affliction
that took the life of Lincoln’s
mother was not “milk
sickness” as history books
claim, but was the work of
vampires.
Grahame’s historic fiction
novel is in the style of Doris
Kearns Goodwin and David

Egg hunters claim candy, prizes Rain brings relief, high
winds early Tuesday

Hundreds of children cleared thousands of treat-filled plastic eggs within just a
few minutes at Pedigo Park Saturday at the annual Easter Eggstravaganza.
LIVINGSTON - Long
overdue rains over the Lake
Livingston dropped up to 1.5
inches of rain in Polk County
early Tuesday morning, bring-
ing slight relief to the drought
conditions.
Mark Waters, assistant man-
ager of the Lake Livingston
Project for the Trinity River
Authority said the rains were
heavier on the south side of the
reservoir. Riverside rain gaug-
es recorded less than an inch
Tuesday.
The rain brought the lake
level up slightly but would not
result in a change to the release
levels at the Lake Livingston
dam.
County staff said the brief
respite had already prompted
several calls asking whether
the countywide bum ban would
be lifted.
“It will remain in effect un-
til we receive substantial rain-
fall,” Pet. 4 Tommy Overstreet
said.
A pair of Onalaska residents
reported seeing a tornado near
their subdivision when the
weather system moved through
the county at about 1 a.m.
Tuesday, bringing wind gusts
of up to 29 miles an hour. Pet. 2
Commissioner Ronnie Vincent
and a sheriff’s deputy said
they saw no damage. Tornado
watches were reissued Monday
night, but storm activity had
occurred as of presstime.
Appraisal notices delayed
by CAD software changes
BY VALERIE REDDELL

LIVINGSTON - A
software conversion under
way at the Polk Central
Appraisal District will delay
the mailing of the 2011
Notices of Appraised Value,
Chief Appraiser Carolyn
Allen announced Monday.
However, any property owner
who wishes to file a protest
beginning May 1 may go
ahead and do so, Allen said.
“This conversion from the
Easy Access software company
to True Automation is tedious
and time consuming, but the
district feels this endeavor
must be accomplished for
the benefit of the taxpayers,
taxing entities of Polk County
and in order to meet legislative
mandates for the 2012
appraisal year,” Allen said.
The district will not have
appraised values set for
2011 until later in May.
The Polk CAD will make
announcements via the media
when the 2011 Notices of
Appraised Value are ready to
be mailed.
Once those notices are
mailed, taxpayers will have 30
days to file a timely protest.
“The law says whether we
have the notices ready or not
(property owners) can file a
protest. If they want to fill one
out, we will keep it,” Allen
said.
About 30 days after the
notices are mailed, the district

First State named county depository
BY VALERIE REDDELL

LIVINGSTON - Polk
County Commissioners
approved First State Bank of
Livingston as its designated
depository Tuesday, based on
a recommendation by County
Treasurer Nola Reneau.
County Judge John
Thompson filed a conflict of
interest statement with the
County Clerk and recused
himself from discussion and
voting.
After turning over the
gavel to Pet. 1 Commissioner
Bob Willis, Thompson left
the courtroom and Reneau
made her presentation to the
remaining members of the
court.
Reneau recommended
First State Bank, the current
depository, after reviewing
applications from local
financial institutions.
She also recommended
using First National Bank of
Livingston and Citizens State
Bank in Corrigan as sub-
depositories.
Reneau advocated using
the Corrigan bank to deposit
funds taken in at the Corrigan
tax office and Justice.of the
Peace office for logistical
reasons, even though CSB did
not complete all the steps in
the application process.
“The funds we keep there are
well within the FDIC insured
amounts,” Reneau said.
Pet. 3 Commissioner Milt
Purvis made a motion to accept
Reneau’s recommendation and
Pet. 2 Commissioner Ronnie
Vincent seconded. Overstreet
and Willis also voted yes,
passing the measure 4-0.
During the public comment
portion of the meeting .Vincent
urged residents to support
