Country Folk
Come by and talk to us
Those of us who
travel, and enjoy eating
as well, we have our fav-
orite places scattered in
every town in West Tex-
as. And for one, plan
my travels to reach those
certain places at meal-
time.
From time to time
over the last several
years that I have written
Country Folk, we have
visited a number of
those good food havens,
places like Fredericks-
burg's, Immigrate's
Landing and My Place
in San Antonio, or
Lowake Inn at Lowake,
Buffalo Gap in Taylor
County and La Borunda
in Marfa,..to name a
few.
Well, they all have a
great story behind them
and we are going to re-
visit some of them in up-
coming columns. But for
this visit, we made an-
other visit to Apple-
gate's landing in Del
Rio.
This unusually beauti-
ful restaurant offers an
atmosphere and charm
all its own. One can have
their meal by the splash-
ing waters of an old
grain mill and select
their salad from the pick-
up bed of a 1928 Model
A.
The story goes that
Pop Applegate, who
wasn't a Pop at all, de-
cided that he wanted to
be one. He searched hill
and dale, high and low,
up and down, until one
day he was struck by
Maid Ursella Ivy's
beauty.
In 1893 "Beauty" was
a wagon brand. Ursella,
always the lady, inquir-
ed "Sir, are you hurt?.
Pop's reply is unrecord-
ed.
"Graciously offering
to assist Pop to the near-
est doctor, Ursella took
a left instead of a right,
putting the couple in
front of a church. Not
wishing to make a bad
impression on a stranger
whom she had just run
over, Ursella married
Pop on the spot.
"Well, you know what
happened. Ursella was
soon Mom Applegate
and there were many
mouths to feed, so Pop,
still slightly dazed,
opened his restaurant."
Some of that family
history is now recreated:
The Old Mill they
ground grain in; the
Back Porch they dawdl-
ed on; the Gazebo they
romanced in; the Model
A they drove in; the Silo
they made hay in; and
some of the original
boards from the first
store.
Says the restaurant
management: "We want
all your readers to know
this restaurant has been
designed and built for
those, who, like us, love
natural things-wood,
brick, and stone." Con-
tinuing, the owners of
Applegate's Landing
went on: "Combine them
with craftsmen's art-
istry and you have a de-
lightful blend of the
old, the new, and the
unusual."
Well, here I've gone
and spent the whole
column talking about the
environment of the
restaurant and your
wondering about the
food! Yes, let me add it
I# excellent.
Their steaks and
shrimp are great. The
Mexican plates are truly
authentic, as Pop
Applegate "was noted
for his nocturnal exploits
in Mexico and brought
back all kinds of hidden
secrets." In the baked
pasta department, the
eatery features; Gilbert-
ini. That's pronounced:
Jill-ber-teeny. "Won in a
stakes poker game in
Iowa, a friend's recipe
of pasta, meat, and
cheese, baked up in the
company of a rich white
butter sauce. Old Gilber,
he's a cooker."
There's plain ham-
burger, sandwiches, the
appetizers of "Macho
Nachos" or Fried
Zucchini or Sauteed
Mushrooms. And of
course that '28 Model
Ford pickup with a bed
full of choice salads.
Applegate's Landing
in Del Rio is a unique
page five
dining plcaxurc and I
can't wait for another
assignment to take me
back there!
