the kickoff and punted

7th Grnde Owls shuts out Menard
By Michael Fisher
Reagan County's 7th
grade recorded their se-
cond straight shutout
victory with a 26-0 de-
molition of the Menard
Yellowjackets. The Owls
turned in their best per-
formances on offense
and defense, gaining 233
yards while holding
Menard to minus six
total yards.
Menard opened the
game by kicking off to
the Owls. Reagan
County drove the ball
from their own 35 to the
Menard 33 where a
fumble halted the drive.
Two plays later,
however, tackle Juan
Pina jarred the ball loose
from the Jacket ball car-
rier and Kelly Baggett
recovered on the Men-
ard 36. • Seven plays
later, Joel Griner scoot-
ed into the end zone
from the two; he then
added the conversion
and with 5:54 left in the
second quarter, the Owls
led 8-0.
Following a short kick-
off, Menard owned a
first down at midfield.
The Owl defense pushed
Menard back to their
own 43 where the Owls
took over on downs.
Four plays later, fullback
Keith Bitner ran off left
tackle for 27 yards and a
touchdown. The conver-
sion attempt, a pass
from Griner to Santiago
de la Rosa, fell in-
complete, and the Owls
led 14-0 with 2:46 left
in the half.
It looked as though the
Owls would score again
before the half. After the
Owls kicked off, Menard
fumbled on the first
play from scrimmage
and Butch Collier
pounced on the ball at
the Menard 37. The
Owls' first play saw
Griner connect with de la
Rosa for 25 yards and a
first down at the Menard
12. The Owls ultimately
moved the ball to the
five, but the Menard de-
fense held.
The Owls opened the
second half by kicking
off to Menard. The
Jackets returned the ball
to their own 40. Three
plays netted a minus
three yards, and Menard
punted to the Owls.
Reagan County took over
on their own 29 and be-
gan an eight play drive.
which was twice slowed
by penalties, to the
Menard end zone. The
touchdown came on a 14
yard scamper by Griner.
The conversion again
failed, and the Owls led
20-0 with 5:10 left in the
game.
Reagan County kicked
off to Menard where the
Yellowjackets took over
on their own 37. Thw
Owl defense again pre-
ssured Menard into a
turnover. Butner sacked
the Menard quarterback
and de la Rosa recovered
on the Menard 28.
Again, the Owls only
needed eight plays to
find the end zone as
David Collins plowed
over from the two. The
pass attempt for the con-
version failed, and Rea-
gan County led 26-0 with
1:38 left in the contest.
The Owls kicked off
to the Jackets, and
Menard returned the
ball to their own 49. On
the next play, Menard
crossed midfield for the
only time, but any hopes
for a first down when Joe
Torres and Randal
Foster sacked the
quarterback for an eight
yard loss on fourth
down. Reagan County
then took over and ran
out the clock.
Offensively, Bitner
gained 76 of Reagan
County's 208 yards
rushing while Griner
added 55 yards on 11
carries. Griner also com-
pleted one pass of 25
yards to de la Rosa. De-
fensively, Baggett nd
J.D. Garland led the
Owls with five tackles
each.
The Owls will have an
open date this week and
will resume play on
Thursday October 15,
when they host a tough
McCamey team at 5:00.
