girls singles
CORPUS CHRISTI — Hol-
li Reynolds finished second in
girls singles at the regional
tennis tournament on Thurs-
day, earning her a trip to the
state tennis tournament.
“Holli had a great tourna-
ment and deserves this trip to
state,” Wharton tennis coach
Roben Eller said. “She played
well and has really closed the
gap with the Rockport girl.”
Reynolds opened the tour-
nament with a 6-0, 6-1 win
over A. Villa of Kingsville.
She then defeated R. Carrea
of Yoakum, 6-1, 6-1 and then
beat L. O’Loughlin of Freder-
icksburg, 6-1, 6-3.
After losing to A. McLain
of Rockport, 6-3, 7-5, she re-
bounded to defeat district foe
J. Baxley of Sealy, 6-2, 6-2.
“Her finals match (against
McLain) was very close, and
with continued hard work,
she will beat her,” Eller said.
“She also showed her tough-
ness by coming back after
losing a tough finals match to
win the play back for second
and a trip to state.”
Wharton also had two dou-
bles teams competing in the
regional tournament, which
was played at Corpus Christi.
In mixed doubles, Brett Ko-
cian and Allie Rath lost to
Perez and Seday of Kingsville,
6-2, 6-4.
“In mixed doubles, we
didn’t play our best tennis,
but sometimes that is how it
goes,” Eller said. ‘You can’t
pick when you are going to
have a bad day.”
In boys doubles, C.J. Rob-
erts and Blake Niemeier
beat Hickman and Meyer of
Smithville, 7-6, 6-4, but then
lost to Zamora and Weather-
ford of Kingsville, 6-7,6-3,6-3.
“Blake and C.J. definitely
had chances, they just couldn’t
win the big points when it
counted,” Eller said.
Wharton’s Chris Reyna
also traveled to the tourna-
ment as an alternate.
“I am proud of the year all
my kids have had,” Eller said.

Wharton High School golfer
Emma Roddy finished fourth
at the regional golf tourna-

Corpus Christi, which quali-
fied her for the Class 3A state
golf tournament in Austin.
Roddy is the first WHS girl
to play in the state tourna-
ment since 1992.
Wharton had girls’ teams
competing at state in 1990,
1991 and 1992 under Coach
Paul Fertsch.
“She played really well,”
WHS golf coach Terry Freese
said. ‘We’re excited for her.
She played absolutely her
best golf of the year.”
Roddy opened with an 84
on Monday, her lowest round
of the year, and finished with
an 88 on Tuesday for a 172 to-
tal.
Kristen Payne of Freder-
icksburg was the medalist
with rounds of 81 and 79 for
a 160 total, while her team-
mate, Katelyn James was sec-
ond with rounds of 84 and 80
for a 164 total.
Phoebe Browne of Sealy,
one of Wharton’s district foes,
was third with a 166 total.
Roddy finished ahead of
two other district opponents
— Britney Belzinger of Bell-
ville (85-88, 173 total) and
Laura Moeller of Columbus
(89-85,174 total).
“She beat girls that beat
her at district,” Freese said.
‘We’re trying to reload. She’s
worked really hard and im-
proved her game.”
Cuero won the team title,
while Sealy was second and
Fredericksburg third.
The Class 3A state tour-
nament will be played May
2-3 at the Jimmy Clay Golf

and finished the regular sea-

against Rice Consolidated on
Tuesday at Boling.
“I don’t feel like we played
as well as we could, but it has

kids just get tired,” Boling

The game was also Parents

its only senior, Barbie Wright.
“The emotion that comes
with nights like these can nev-
er be underestimated,” Bush
added. ‘We have had a long
successful regular season, and
I hope to give the kids some
time off before we get into the
postseason.”
Against Rice, Boling
jumped out to a 4-0 lead after
one inning and never looked
back. The Lady Bulldogs add-
SOFTBALL
ed three in the third and two
each in the fourth and fifth in-
nings.
Hannah Ortiz took the win
on the mound. She pitched
four innings and gave up three
hits, one walk and struck out
six batters.
Sierra Ganske threw the
final inning with no hits, no
walks and one strikeout.
Leading hitters included:
Hannah Ortiz 2-4 with a
triple and two RBI, Brittany
Pless 2-3 with a triple, My-

and two RBI, and Cami Hill
1-2.
The Lady Bulldogs will
play either Winnie or East

“After a short break, we
will have one goal in mind —
a playoff win,” Bush said.
“I feel like the kids will be
able to regain their focus for
the postseason, and I feel like
they really understand what
it takes to be successful,”
Bush added.
