Congratulations to the Child-
ress Bobcats, runners-up to the
state basketball championship
and winners over the Westerners
in their bi-district play.
Track Meet To Be Held
Today At Chapman Field
The Lubbock Westerners have the first track meet with
out-of-town competition this afternoon at 4 o’clock at
Chapman field.
If any of the track boys seem to
have lost their appetite, they’re not
in love, just trying to lose 8 or 10
pounds to get down to the right
running weight.
T. J. Price seems to be able to
play just about anything. Pole
vaulting, basketball, and foot-
ball all come natural to him.
Kenneth Ca/wthorn, Westerner
end, underwent an operation in
Dallas to cure an injury to his leg
received, in a football workout. It
is reported he is doing much better
than expected.
Joe L. Thompson, puarter-
back on last year’s Westerner
football team, left for the armed
services last Saturday. Joe was
a student at Tech and played
with the Raiders this last year.
The 1944 Westerner track team
will receive its baptismal of fire at
Chapman Field this afternoon. The
Westerners meet the thinly clads
from Levelland. Coach Marlin R-
“Shorty’’ Hay hurst urges all stu-
dents to turn out for the meet.
Games Replace
Exercises In P.E.
“Hot dog! P. E. this period.”
That’s the cry that is replacing
the groans of former days in the
boys’ physical education classes.
The cause of this hilarity was the
discontinuing of boxing and long
periods devoted entirely to exercis-
es. The boys still take about 20
minutes of exercises each day, but
there are only limbering up work-
outs. In place of these things, bas-
ketball and other games have been
instituted.
A physical education class period
schedule is between 20 and 30 minut-
es of warm-up exercises These loosen
the muscles and build and strength-
en them. Then the boys divide into
teams of five and have basketball
scrimmages for 15 or 20 minutes.
This spring Coach Marlin R.
“Shorty” Hay hurst plans to take
the classes over to the Dupree par-
ade grounds and let them play base-
ball and touch football. The phy-
sical education classes are looking
forward to this.
Of basketball ,Coach Hayhurst
says, “There is no better game for
building muscles, cordination, and
endurance. Basketball is also a
great developer of team work and
team spirit. It, as does any other
real American game, gives the play-
ers the will to win and the determin-
"A blanket invitation has been
given to all schools around Lub-
bock,” stated Mr. E. J. Lowrey, dir-
ector of athletics.' “This meet will
get the boys in shape and produce
more interest,” he explained.
Although a few of the boys have
been working out for about a month,
the bulk of the track team has just
been out about a week. Bad iweath-
er has hindered their getting in
shape too.
“Although we don’t know any-
thing about Levelland’s experience,
we do know that they always have a
good track team,” pointed out Mar-
lin R. “Shorty” Hayhurst, the
coach.
The Westerners’ experience comes
from the six returning lettermen
from last year. They are Roy
“Deacon” Grimes, 440-yard dash
and one mile relay man; A. L.
Graham, one mile run; Johnny
Davis, pole vaulter; Bobby Martin,
discus throw; Burl Moore, 440-yard
440 relay and dash man; Bill Cope,
dash, 440 relay, and 100 yard dash
man. Bill and Burl probably won’t
be in shape because of injuries.
Other sqLuadmen returning are
George Brewer, Milton Butler, Bue-
ron Lindsey, Louis Hunt, John
Sessums, R. W. Moyers, and N. W.
Elston.

Sunset Champions;
Defeat Childress
Sunset of Dallas is now the crown-
ed champion of AA conference
basketball in Texas this year after
defeating the “giant killers” of
Childress 29 to 20 in the final play-
off in the state race held at Austin
March 2, 3, and 4.
Childress met one giant too many
Saturday /when they engaged the
Bisons, and they couldn’t score
against the zone defense applied, by
the Sunset five. Sunset believed the
Bobcats could be stopped if their
getting under the basket could be
prevented and proved it when they
made the Bobcats shoot from great-
er distances than that to which they
had been shooting in previous
games. A small percent of the long
shots hit the basket but the Child-
ress boy scouldn’t catch the early
lead the Bisons piled up led by Tur-
ner, lanky Bison center who took
high scoring honors of the game
