LHS Overcomes Snyder Nine;
Cleaves Games With Midland
Lubbock High School’s baseball
team split games with the Midland
Bulldogs in a doubleheader Satur-
day at Mackenzie Park.
HERSHEL ELMORE pitched the
Westerners to a 5-3 win in the
opener, bringing his season record
to 3 wins, 3 losses. The LHS nine
dropped the second game 4-1, with
Larry Mitchell absorbing the loss;
his season record now is 1-2.
Connecting for base hits in the
first game were Harry Pryjomski,
a double and a single; Darwin Hill-
iard, two singles; and Harvey Mc-
Wright; Bobby Paulger, Mike
Webb, Cary Marshall, and Elmore,

LHS Orchestra Enters
Contest At Monterey
Lubbock High School’s 58-piece
orchestra will participate in sight
reading and concert playing at the
annual orchestra contest at Mon-
terey High School tomorrow, re-
ports Mrs. Dorothy Holland, di-
rector.
LHS also has five soloists en-
tered in competition: Linda Kerr,
viola; David Watkins, cello; and
Belvered Needles, William White-
side, and Paul Rampy, violin.
Concert number for strings is
ir^Adagio^by Correlli. The “Ov-
erture to Merry Wives of Wind-
sor” by Nicolai and “Dance of the
Clowns” by Rimsky-Lorsakov will
j be rendered by the full orchestra.
Julia Mingus, as concert-mist-
ress, will lead the group composed
I of fifty eight LHS students.

HITTING in the second game
were Webb, a double and a single,
Hilliard, two singles; and Pryjoms-
ki, Ronald Caffee, and Marshall,
singles.
In a single game Friday, Mike
Farley hurled the Westerner nine
past Snyder, 9-4. This was Farley’s
third win against one defeat.
EARLIER IN THE season, the
Snyder team was victorious over
Monterey’s Plainsmen.
The Westerners opened their dis-
trict play against the Plainview
Bulldogs Tuesday with a 7-8 rec-
ord.
In two more district tilts, the
Westerners meet Amarillo’s Sand-
ies today and Palo Duro’s Dons
tomorrow. Both games will be
played at home.
Golf Team Scores
Sixth In Contest
With a total score of 338 points
Lubbock High School’s link team
came in sixth at the 3-AAAA dis-
trict golf meet Saturday, March 28
in Lubbock.
JOHNNY RODGERS led the
Westerners by posting' a 76 for 18
holes.
Monterey High School emerged
first with a 306 total; Amarillo
Sandies, third; Tascosa, fourth; and
Pampa fifth. Palo Duro came in
behind Lubbock High with a 340
mark and Plainview was last with
342.
BORGER EMERGED first in the
meet last Saturday, in Amarillo,
shooting a total of 303. Amarillo
was second in the team race with
623 strokes, followed by Tascosa
at 628. The Westerners came out
seventh with 657, following Mon-
terey at 644.
The final district round will be
played at Pampa Country Club
April 18 with the two low teams
qualifying for the regional meet
at Odessa, April 24-25.

Named In Kansi
At a recent pizza-pie eating con-1
test at Kansas University, the boy’
who won downed five pizzas be-
fore being named “Pizza King.”

Ten Lubbock High School Cin-
dermen are in Amarillo to partici-
pate in the Sandie Relays today
and tomorrow.
Today’s preliminaries will be
followed by finals tomorrow after-
noon.
KENNETH HAWKINS is enter-
ed in low hurdles, high jump, and
pole vault; Gary Milburn, 440-yard
run; Wayne Phillips, 880-yard run;

Play Volleyball
It’s volleyball time again for
both girls and boys in Lubbock
High School’s physical education
classes, report Mrs. Frances Winn
and Coach Ronald Robbins, teach-
ers.
Girls are being drilled on vari-
our skill techniques of volleyball
in preparation for tournaments
scheduled for the third week in
April, says Mrs. Winn.
Each class will elect a team and
the class teams will compete ag-
ainst each other. Class champions
will be awarded silver volleyballs,
she added.
Boys P.E. classes will divide into
four teams with each class having
a tournament to determine its best
team, Coach Robbins explained.
Class champions will be selected
by a round-robin tournament.

In Amarillo To Prepare For 3-4A Play
Lubbock High School’s tennis
team traveled north today for the
Amarillo Relays.
In four-way matches at Amar-
illo last week, the LHS team won
six matches while dropping three.
LHS netters in the matches were
Diane Melbourne, A singles; Linda
Taylor, B singles; Sudie Halsey
and Jane Underwood, A doubles;
Cecile Camp and Celia Forrest,
B doubles. In the boys division
were Mike Malley, A singles and
