HEARINGS RECESSED
By GERALDINE WATSON
The natives say Massey Lake
is bottomless. When I shoved a
fishing pole down as far as it
would go without touching bot-
tom- right at the edge where
my boat was moored- it was easy
to believe. The water is inky
black when viewed from a dis-
tance or from its surface, yet a
boat paddle deep in the water
is distinctly visible as. though
the water were crystal clear. It
reminds one of the ' old horror
movie, "Creature from the Black
Lagoon".
Massey Lake is about 200 feet
wide and approximately a mile,
long. The water level remains con-
stant and a wide variety of veg-
etation borders its low banks,
hanging over the water, drip-
ping with resurrection fern and
Spanish moss. Large, grand old
cypress nesting trees which have
no doubt sheltered myriads of
woodland mothers and their yourg

size leaves which show such a

clematis-oh, so many! It looks
much more like a jungle river
than the ancient Village creek
bed it is said to be. There are
many such lakes in the Village
Creek area, for the creek has
been and still is a wanderer, but
as far as I know, this is the lar-
gest.
The constant moisture encou-
rages a lush growth of mosses
and ferns among the cypress
knees about the lake and it was
this that prompted my interest.
First, I thought it might have a
waterbird population, but the
lack of shallow water discourag-
ed that possibility - next, it is
ideal invironment for Psilotum
nudum, the whisk broom fern,
found only once in Texas near
Saratoga, and I have been on the
